The clear finish on maple necks can wear down between frets and chip along the edge of the fingerboard, soaking up grimy sweat and staining. Rosewood can be oiled and even stained, rejuvenating the finish quite easily.

Sorry dudes, didn't know this had been a previous thread. I'm the new guy, MY BAD!!!!

However, I should have said, Other than rosewood and Maple, what woods would you use to make a guitar neck?

Hope that is better......

I would like a ALL KOA neck, think that would be sweet!

I have 2 Les Pauls, w'ebony boards. I love those things, so .....playable!?

The Maple, to me, is a cosmetic thing to an extent. Like Birdeye maple. Who doesn't like that? I think KOA would be beautiful, not sure how it would sound?

Rosewood on the other hand, also has many different variations too. But, if I was gonna pound out songs all night, I think rosewood absorbs sweat a little better. You know, doesn't get that "wet" feeling like a maple.

So, YES! They are very different, but the world would be the same w/o either!!!

I have both, and I just love my maple fretboard. It is so smooth and pleasant to play.

I agree with CAFeathers....BOTH! LOL. Hope this is not redundant! I play both every day.

On another note: It is amazing how different guitars will inspire different styles. I pick up a Tele with maple and i head off one way. Then I pick up one of my Strat Plus' with Rosewood (or Maple) and go off some other direction. A 52 Tele just does something different than a Strat and, well, a Ultra does something else all together! (ebony fretboard!) So, I love and play them all...with passion! 8)

Does this happen to any of the rest of you? I mean chick'en pick'in on one guitar. Blues on another. Then Jazz or Fusion on yet another....

Right on. Candy cola red with Rosewood, vs. Oly white with Maple, vs. Surf Green with maple, vs. 3 color burst with Rosewood.... all different tunes in my head. The instrument owns me

I gotta go with maple. I also like pau ferro and macassar ebony, which make for a smooth, bright-sounding fingerboard without the cosmetic drawbacks of maple as they age, but have a nice warm look to them similar to a good light-hued slab of Brazilian rosewood. Rosewood itself, though, I find to have too dark of a tone for my taste. JMO.
