I think too many people swap pickups without having any idea of what they want to change about their tone, or of how to get where they want.

This is a bad subject ..I have a Strat ultra that has the Red silver Blue Lace sensor pickups in it that i love the tone of..

So i recently bought a Floyd Rose strat that had very good stock pick ups..I thought that i would up grade the pups any way.. So i got a Red/silver Dually Lace Sensor for the bridge and a Gold lace for the neck since Lace pups sound so well in the ultra..

I installed them in the Floyd Rose and i can not stand the way it sounds ..

The worse part is i thought the stock pups didn't have much value so i gave them to a friend before hearing how terrible these lace sensors sound...I have since gotten frustrated with the guitar it is now for sale on E-BAY

You're welcome.

Agreed. Too many players feel this must be done instantly upon receiving a new guitar or bass and don't even give the OEM stuff a chance.

You're welcome.

Agreed. It seems to be a compulsion with way too many players these days. They feel compelled to immediately gut their instrument(s) of the OEM pickups, electronics, hardware, etc. without even giving any of it a chance.

In short, what was your most disappointing pickup swap?

Mine? Replacing the stock bridge pup on a 90's something American Standard Tele that was already acoustically challenged with an Antiquities bridge...

a dead guitar is a dead guitar...

I have only changed one pickup on any of the guitars I own or have ever owned. It happens to be the Bridge pickup on my HWY1 Stratocaster from the stock SC Alnico III to a Dimarzio Super Distortion. I happened to change the Volume pot as well to a 500K. I recieved a lot of good advise from the very knowlegable FF members, especially Martin.

It did exactly what I wanted it to do. It gave me a little more umph in the bridge position and I can split it to a SC-type sound in another position. Absolutely beautiful tone in all posititons. Of course I knew what I was looking for and knew I could not achieve it with the stock bridge pick-up. I still have the stock bridge SC pickup and the orginal tone pot; just in case I want to return it back to the orginal configuration (I do not see that happening any time soon).

Yeah maybe, the stock pu in my mahogany strat was alright. The TB4 blows it away. I get that smoking Jake E Lee Badlands thing happening now which is sa-wee-tah.

I put a

Bridge: DiM ToneZone
Neck: Air Norton

in my Ibanez RG321MH.

The Air Norton sounded like GARBAGE in the the mahogany. Too muddy.

I think I benefited from the magical 2006-2007 of Fender Mexico. I have a 2007 Standard Strat...and have now more firmly decided to not change anything.

What helped settle this was having a friend come over last night and listen to him play my guitar. We both play let's say pretty good...

Had fleeting thoughts of putting in Texas Specials...but hey Fender's got the Roadhouse...

He let me play his Classic 60's (not Player's) and I also have my sights on that guitar model as another guitar as I rebuild my Strat collection.

For me, I had to actually liquidate my collection to acheieve some degree of guitar maturity. Not the solution for everyone. But a drastic one that I needed. I truly wanted to start all over, as crazy as that sounds. In short, I was the one who needed to get modded.

A set of Seymour Duncan Alnico 2 Pro single coils saved the day, but made my Highway more expensive than a Std US Strat!

The original Highway p/ups went into an old Squier strat where they sound just fine actually. The SCNs are on my 'not sure what to do with' shelf..

It's funny you should say that. I swapped in some SCN's in my HWY1 strat and I love them. SCN's are definitely seem a controversial pickup, though. Some people love them, some people don't.

What kind of amp are you playing yours through?

I have a Blue Jr NOS.

Most of the time the stock pickups are fine. I knew when I played my Fender in the store that the bridge pickup was not going to do it for me, but the guitar played like a dream. I figured that I would change it out sooner or later, and it happened to be a lot sooner than later.

I like SCN's through anything except the blues junior. The mid range on that amp is ugly. I use a lot of amp midrange with my SCN's they sound a bit too thin otherwise.
Despite my previous comments about that amp, I dug it out today and put the tele through it. Its not that bad with a decent tele bridge pickup.

Most often it's a Blues Junior with Celestion V30 driver. At home it's with a Vox AC4TV. Occasionally it's with my old Ashdown Peacemaker 40watt.

Maybe you should think a little bit before you decide to bash other people's equipment. If noone else is going to speak up, I certainly will. You're bringing down what I've already stated is precisely what I play. I really enjoy that amp and there's no reason to bring it down.
