Yes. To go with the rest of the army of impersonaters. Am I the only one that finds guitarists impersonating other guitarists a bit strange? I mean we all played along to records, spent time sussing out the favourite riffs. Why would anyone want to undermine all that hardwork and effort by cloning their idol/idle (as in bone idle).
Sod that, I want to be me, not some dead bloke.

Sadly, some people find it easier to be someone else than themselves. They have no identity of their own or they don't like their own identity. It's one thing when you're a kid and you're trying to figure who you are when you're an adult, it's not cute any more - it's a disorder.

Funny thing is, when I was a kid, I had no record collection. I just heard stuff on the radio and stuff my brother had and that was about it. When I do covers today, it still has my own spin on it, I rarely play songs note for note and no one ever seemed to mind, some people even find it refreshing that I'm not butchering up someone else's solo . Finding your own voice and style is the most important part of being a musician, not being a parrot.

Thats the best ear training I've found. Put the radio on, some show you'd never listen to normally and play along. The name of the game being suss out how to play the song before its finished. Dont tune into some blues station if thats what you play all the time, you wont learn anything. Put the metal, jazz or country on instead. Its a bit of a challenge but very worthwhile and improves your ability and repertoire no end.

I like to play along with TV shows and commercials. It's interesting to learn the types of tricks they do (key changes, phrasing) and when it comes to commercials, you have a very short time to figure out the tune.

Matt comercials are a fave of mine too. The whole comercials music thing is like a genere all in itself. Really good for teaching you to play the backseat role whilst still being prominent. If that makes any sense.

Tv shows are another great source of music you'd never normally play. Yes I know king of the hill and beavis and buthead. Southpark isnt too different from any primus tune (all over the place). Ren and stimpy is a good one, a jazzy, surfy, manic 12bar. Hill street blues is a classic of emotive guitar. The theme tune to the sweeny makes for a great rocker.

Ha ha,TV commercials are what I do to. Most of the time is the CMT (Coutry Music TV) I love those pickin' "I married a waitress and don't know her name" songs. Jk....

The new Country has a ton of blues/rock/jazz/even classical. I see Gibson pushing its way into the mainstream arming good ole cowboys with various LPs vs their Tele's.
