Do "pups" = pickups? What are pups? Why are they called pups?

Yes, it's just an abbreviated way to say pickups.

or shorter = pu's

I first heard them called "pups" from a guitar tech, then started noticing some of the makers sites, such as :

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Been calling them PUPs since the 70"s.

Ok PickUPS does mean pups. Got it.
