For me, the Strat Plus Ultra. Call me crazy, but I just love 'em.

That's where I'm leaning too, just got the Clapton Strat used, but now there's an ultra up for sale. I would have to get rid of the Clapton Strat to afford the Ultra. A Clapton Strat will be easier to get down the road than the Ultra.

Personaly I favour V necks. Unless the ultra had one I wouldnt be too intrested in it. Them clapton necks are a beautiful thing.

Ultra's may well be harder to come by. If your getting it as a investment, you need to be able to put under the bed and forget about it.

Frankly, neither model lights up my, "desirability meter".

Call me nuts but I don't like to buying guitars named after the user like the Clapton or the SRV or that dreadful British flag guitar. Love the artists but hate the guitars. Rather have one that is more unique and more ot your own color and taste, that sounds just as good. Sorry, just a personal opinion.

I'm not a big fan of either, but if I had to choose it would be the ultra.

Forget the name. You can order that guitar made to measure from the Custom Shop. Have Todd Kraus build it out of mystery wood and paint it sky-blue pink if you will. Do what ever you want with the neck, but specifiy the Clapton neck profile, or that of the '57 Hotrod, combined with the electronics of either, as you choose.

In the end, you will have your more unique and personalized instrument which sounds great and both Niki and I will enjoy playing the paint and frets off the sucker. As for the name....you can't have it on that guitar. They won't let!

If I were doing it again, cause I've done it once with not quite the satisfaction I'd hoped for, I have it built out of a single block of prime ash with the best grain pattern he could find, finish it in Sienna Sunburst, with gold hardware, all white plastic and Lace Sensors. Hows that for individuality. Then I'd send overseas to Niki so he could noodle with it for awhile, and pray I got it back.

Maybe he'll tell you why he owns a '57 Hotrod. It's an interesting tale. 8)

But I digresssssss.............

As to the OP.....try this on for size: of its type, the Ultra was the top of the line Plus guitar built. The Artist Series Clapton is level one with respect to how Fender offers it. Next comes Custom Shop, and then Masterbuilt (which is the way that guitar should be purchased if one can afford it.)

Keeping within your means? Then play 'em both, and keep the one which calls your name. I've swapped out some heavy duty stuff in my day to get what I was seeking, the reason being that what I swapped out didn't blow in in my ear and make the hair on the back of my neck stand up the way the others did.

Doc
