ive played the hss deluxe strat and wasnt very impressed with the humbucker, i played the single coil and it sounded pretty good gain wise... im still on the decision of getting the hss or single coil deluxe. i heard single coils are harder to play, is splitting the humbucker a good idea? help me out guys!

One pickup is just as easy to play as another. I'm not gonna say that a single coil sounds better than a humbucker, they both have their place. It's just more of a preference really.

I prefer the growl of single coils myself. But there are times when I here non-Fender players, like Freddie King and that makes me wanna go out and buy a 335. Duane Allman makes me wanna buy a Les Paul, etc.,etc..

My personal opinion is that Strats should have all single coils and LP's should have all humbuckers. I have both.

Pickups do not affect playability but do affect the tone.

I have a real nice HSS USA ash strat,,But i dont care much for the humbucker or the S1 switch. My korean strat with SSS actually sounds better,, but is not all around better by any means.

hss coils when played clean give off this fat slightly distorted sound, depending which amp. they rock. single coils however can go from pretty thin to somewhat fatter by using different features or pedals for your amp.
what are you into?

I'm going to agree with Chet- there's something about the SSS Strat and Humbucker Les - those configurations are what defined these two guitars; I also have both a SSS Strat and a Les Paul Classic (Epi) and they are both tremendous guitars which do what they do extremely well- if it ain't broke...

i like the sound with singles and humbuckers, ssh is what i like to play and the single, has a mean sound that is nice to have, but the humbucker has that fat tone that i mean you gotta love, but if you put them both together you have a massive sound of fat town with a mean sound of the single and it sound like the wall of sound deep with high sounds.

and pickups no matter what, only sound good with the guitar player and the other equipment like the amp... the amp is a big reason for the sound of the pickup, the better the amp the better your pick ups sound either single or humbucker... put 2 and 2 together you have the massive sound of a titan...

Alvin Lee is a perfect example of mixing different pickups out of one guitar by putting a single coil in a 335. Sounds damn good too.

I'm a recent Ibanez convert. I own two Highway One Strats, one with single coils and one with a humbucker. Honestly, I'm still usually picking up the HSS Strat. I guess because I still play alot of heavier music, but the Custom 69 set in my Surf Green Highway One can handle heavier stuff just as well... except for the hum.

I have an American Strat SSS, but I tended to switch out pickups until I found the right combination for me. A single coil in the bridge gives a nice growl, but there are some very good stacked humbuckers that fit in a single coil slot, and can give a great crunch tone. My current setup is a Custom Shop 69 in the neck and middle with a DiMarzio Super Distortion pickup in the bridge. To me, this setup makes my Strat so versatile that I can play anthing without changing guitars. People are amazed at the deep heavy distortion the comes out of my strat with that little bridge pickup. I use a stock Marsahall AVT 50 combo to play heavy rock, and a Fender HotRod Deluxe, or Vibroking Custom for blues.

I agree, Strats are a single coil guitar. If I want a humbuckers tone I grab my LP or Guild hollowbody. I know everyone can't afford them all, but every collection should have a strat, lp and hollowbody.

I've never been a fan of humbucker strats. It just ain't right.

Well, I like single coils, and I like humbuckers. I agree that Les Pauls are for humbucking and strats are for whatever their for, but the strat body is like the most ingenius design ever. It's got some nice contours, and some sweet curves that feel real comfy and friendly. Les puals are all pointy around the edges, and they don't really have any countours to speak of. If you want to blend the no-noise but fat sound of a les paul w/ the comyness of a strat, then I say get a hybrid model. The Strat HH is made of alder, which doesn't really deliver enough punch, so get a mahogany body for it. Les Pauls are versitle too, because they have a seperate volume and tone control per pickup, and a lot of ppl don't want to give that up.

Here's probably the dream guitar(listen up Fender employees). Mahogony strat style body with a locking tremolo and a locking nut. Two humbuckers w/ separate volume/tone controls, and a Fender headstock. Don't even bother w/ a pickguard.

I'd also like to test some blade humbuckers(the ones that fit6 a single coil route).
