Hi All:

I was wondering if anyone here owned one of the 500 John Mayer Cypress Mica Signature Stratocasters, and, if so, what you thought of it?

Where does it fit in your arsenal? What do you like (or dislike) about it?

Thanks for any input you might have!

I have one. I don't know if the one guy is joking but it is made in the USA, and is an artist series strat. It is a very nice guitar, the nicest strat I have owned. Before I owned the JM I had a Hardtail American Standard, MIM Classic Player's 60 Strat, 80s MIJ, and 1983 Squier. I am big fan of the chunky neck with the Tall frets. Very comfortable for me because I have large hands, and it is one of the larger production strat necks up there with the SRV and HR62. The Big Dippers are very amazing and versatile pickups. Cloth wiring, Fender/Gotoh Tuners, and unique finish.

How many Strats does Mayer have out. Wait till he picks up a tele I can see that one coming. I think Chanman is going to wind up a roadie for Mayer if he gets 5 minutes with him.

Well they aren't really different strats, they all have the same specs except the black one, just different color options. They have been offered in Cypress Mica, Shoreline gold ( With Stripe), Charcoal Frost Metallic ( With Stripe), Olympic white, and 3 tone Sunburst. He has been playing Teles and La Cabronita Es specials a lot lately. I know a lot of people hate on him here, but his sig strat is a pretty nice guitar.

Don't know why he doesn't use It anymore. It is quite different and smart...I would prefeer It instead of the white one on sale now. Maybe next year will bring us some changes on current models?

Hello all,
my first post :D . I got my JM strat in 2007 at the Sam Ash store in NYC. I was looking for a nice strat and had the 57 reissue in mind. I never knew JM had a signature strat and I chance picked this one along with quite a few others. Infact, at the time I was quite disappointed to learn it was the JM strat...! sorry John.. and the only song I had heard by JM was the wonderland song.. which I wasnt too fond of :P .

But I must say this guitar definitely felt different and for playing the blues its a fine instrument. If I remember correct, when I strummed it unplugged for the first time, I went - wow which model is this?. It just felt kind of more 'woody', rather than jingly jangly. The neck is quite bulkier than the regular. It also has amphead tone and volume knobs, which makes it a bit cosmetically different I guess. It lacks the backplate but maybe John Mayer wanted it that way. The factory set up on this guitar was not bad, considering I chose a fresh one from the case. The first one I tried had a few marks on it. It is quite a classy strat look wise.

The big dipper pickups are the highlight of this guitar. I don't know if they are available separately from Fender but they just got it right with those for this particular model. Although as a downside, I feel that they might be a bit lacking when playing within highly layered setups. I felt quite limited in multi guitarist jams with friends. Maybe it wasnt designed for such setups. It's a John Mayer strat after all.

In the two years I've owned it, I have found myself playing this particular guitar for mainly blues, and some recording clean sounds. It is not my main guitar. Having said that, i'm pretty happy with it. it is a fine one in my collection and I don't intend to sell it. Some say its is a collectible guitar as only 500 of them were made but I'm not really sure. Collectible or not, it is indeed a great strat to have. :)

I have been given the chance to have a chat with Rene Martinez before John's show in march, so I may end up a roadie! Lol who knows. I know every instrument, effect, amp and strap he has used since 2004!

Chandler,

Any chance you can hook me up with your inside sources. I'd love to talk to Rene when I go to see JM in Vancouver in April. Or even if you could find me some backstage passes.

What are you plans for your TBO Replica, when you get the CS Relic?

Sorry to thread jack, I haven't had a chance to play the Cypress Mica model, just the Standard Sig. I also love the chinky neck.

GregB777,

Are you asking because you have the chance to get one?

I have one of these JM Mica Green Limiteds. I bought mine in 07 for the paltry sum of 1400 USD. This was the 2007 Ltd version of his Strat and there were only 500 pieces. Alder with African Rosewood.

What was different about this one was the case. It came with an INCASE case, which is more of a gig bag. It had some special embroidery and some funky case candy. But it's set up like a 62 Reissue, but with a "C" shaped neck, most likely to resemble the chunky neck on his SRV which was his main axe when he started. He took off the SRV pickguard. There is also no rear trem cover nor screw holes for it. It had all 5 trem springs installed (also an SRV feature) Vintage 6 screw trem, vintage tuners. Since it's an early 60's style neck the truss rod adjsutment is at the bridge end of the neck. It also was unique in that it had 60's era amp knobs instead of the standard Fender UFO knobs. And also you can't forget that color. Not my favorite, but I guess more utilitarian, almost army green like. But certainly a cool and different sounding Strat.
