Hello All-

I am thinking about taking up a winter project and am somewhat unsure of how to go about It....

I' am taking an old Affinity strat and oh how shall we say..... customizing it. Im going to take all the paint off of the body and sand it down to the natural wood to stain. My question is tofold....

1. Would i have to apply any sort of paint stripper to the body to get the fpaint off or will sanding it do the trick and if so what brand is preferred...

2. Does sanding the finish off of the neck affect the feel or the tone of it?

oh and BTW the strat going under the knife is a (supposedly) 1997 Affinity strat with the early 60s headstock.

thanks guys really appreciate your help.

Use a heat gun and a scraper to get the paint off. Its bulletproof polyester on squire guitars. Sanding will be long and laborious. Chemical strippers will hardly touch it.

You might not be happy with the wood you'll find though... it will most likely be several pieces glued together to form the blank and the grains might not match for a stain finish. More expensive guitars come in one to three pieces especially where stains and sunburst finish will be applied. You might end up seeing as much as six pieces under an opaque finish.

Good call Manabu, but i already thought about that.

You see, it could use a new paint job anyway so i figure if i get down there and it is like you say in like 6 pieces i could always just put a nice pearlescent finish on her.

Never hurts to have a plan b. thanks

And about the Neck.......... any tips on the neck......
