Here is the setup in question. This has to be one of the hottest sounding strats I have heard. Does anybody know what Gary Moore has under the hood of this strat?

sounds like a dod250 OD into a marshall dual superlead to me. Theres a good bit of noise suppression going on too.

you also need to put in some serious work on your "guitar face" to coax out that kind of hotness... and your Strat must be red!

Its mainly the amp to my ear. There is a bit of a boost to the signal that you'd get a good clone of with any O.D pedal.
Here's some modded Dod's

I've seen this clip so many times and it never fails to move me.

A good instrument in the hands of a practised and commited student, with the volume cranked to 10, all in a sympathetic setting, reminds of us why the electric blues guitar is the most thrilling, extreme piece of hardware ever.

A snorting, growling, spinning, overdriven Hammond B3 organ in the hands of Lord, Airey or Emerson comes close. But the guitar has the edge..

The DOD 250 was a very popular overdrive pedal. Unfortunately they are no longer in production but you can find a vintage one on eBay for about $100.00. The MXR Distortion+ contains virtually the same circuit with a little variation in resistor values and is available from any retail source.

Ditto! Witness Joe Bonamassa at The Albert Hall.

Of course, the pickups could have been swapped out as well. Methinks any quality multifex floor board, some time and tasteful tweaking could come up with that tone through a decent amp.

I would agree with Niki but i disagree with the Dod 250 i would be thinking that is a Ibanez 808 in front of a Jcm 800 or super lead but it is Marshall -OD and Strat all the way..I'm going to search for what his guitar rig is ..

According to his website from 1990 onward this is his rig
59 Les Paul
Marshall Guv'nor pedal
Marshall JTM 45 amp
Marshall vintage 4x12 cab

But that sure isn't a Les Paul he is using in that performance..So i guess that didn't help much

I'm just going to toss in my thoughts here after watching the video for a second...these are as always, just my own personal opinions.

I wish that was a higher quality video because it's really hard to tell from this Youtube version, but I don't think that's the Ibanez 808. If you watch the video closely, at 2:22, the camera shows the pedals in front of him for just a moment...the 808 is rather distinctive in that it's that bright green and I don't see one of those in front of him (although that's not to say that there isn't one somewhere else on the stage). Interestingly enough, I am seeing a square, chrome box to Moore's left that almost looks like an Eletro-Harmonix Muff Fuzz. The "long" pedal on the right is mostly likely the wah-wah and who know's what the black pedal could be.

There is another back shot around 5:24 in the vid but the quality is so bad, it's really hard to tell anything at all from it. There's another shot of the pedals at 7:08 but again the vid quality is so poor I can't really see anything there definitive or decisive. There is a brighter colored pedal in that shot but it still doesn't look like that distinctive green to me (although it doesn't really look like a DOD 250 either).

If someone has this on DVD or Blue Ray, they might be able to get a better look...but after watching the YouTube clip a few times now, I don't think I see anything there that looks like an 808.

Man...ya know I'm no expert by -ANY- means but if that's the case, that has got to be the strangest looking Les Paul I have EVER seen...'59 or otherwise! LOL!!! Sorry man but I don't care what his website says...unless my eyes are deceived by some spell, that really looks like a bright red Strat with a rosewood fretboard to me! Hhmmm...maybe back in '04 Gibson was doing "secret testing" of those Hendrix Strats they released earlier this year...kind of like one of those government cover-up things! LOL!!!!! Moore is playing a Hendrix tune there after all...

Also, watching that video...while I'm seeing what looks like a Fender Twin, a HiWatt and what looks like a Marshall JCM 800/900 maybe, I'm not seeing a JTM 45 there anywhere either. The JTM 45 only has 6 knobs on the front of it (I just Google'd it to make sure) and the Marshall he has on stage there looks to have 8 knobs...in fact at around 6:05 in the video, the camera did a close up of the amp on the big screen behind him...definitely has -8- knobs and not 6...not a JTM 45. Now as to which amp or amps he's using in that vid...only his roadie knows for sure! LOL! Honestly...for all we know he could be running the Marshall -and- the Hiwatt there or the HiWatt and the Fender...there's no real way of knowing. I'm almost willing to bet though that one of the pedals he has on the floor there in front of him might be a splitter box of some kind...hhmmm.

Seriously....Les Paul and a JTM 45? Are you sure we're all watching the same video here?? Again I'm no expert...the vid quality isn't very good at all and I could certainly be wrong but in regards to this 2004 concert/video, I'd have to take the info on that website as being just a little bit subjective...just a tich :-).

Peace,
Jim
