Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Talk about finding a treasure. To bad he couldn't buy the rest of those guitars too.

tell me about it.
yzf, i believe the story, because of the simple fact that musicians usually have multiple axes.

treasure and talk about mojo.
have you heard chris duarte play? he has a recognizable srv tone.

I haven't heard him play but I see that he has some stuff online. I'll have to check him out when I get home. The speakers here at work are on the fritz. :(

In more way than one. If this '63 is truly the voice on the recording someone in Seattle is going to be monstrously bummed out to the tune of $450K plus buyer's premium. Not withstanding its collectors value as EC's main axe during the Dominoes years, it was also the Layla guitar.

Lacking the auction catalog for the sale of "Brownie" I can't confirm the veracity of the story. Perhaps someone in the Forum has it in their library
and can refer to it for fact.

I would be extremely surprised if an organization like Christies would have allowed itself to be put in a position to have inadvertently misrepresented the facts.

I am a Chris Duarte fan.

Like any good story, some parts may be true, others not so true. For example, Clapton's famous 1964 ES-335 was the hollowbody used at the RAH Cream farewell concert, not a ES-345. So there was some embellishment of the story of these guitars. It's too bad Duarte didn't end up with any sort of documentation ... those guitars might have been Harrison's and Clapton's ... that part of the story seems reasonable, but a Harrison and Clapton fan could have put that collection together.

... a '63 Strat certainly could have been used on parts of the "Layla" album, I've never seen a detailed description of what all was used. We've heard the story of how Blackie came to be, but the parts that didn't end up on Blackie could have been reassembled ... and then given away as EC was fond of doing ...

yeah orville,
i realize that the story could be embelished, however cool though.

either way chris got a 63 strat for what a custom shop cost.
and not for 10s of thousands.

you actually have an actual 60 something strat right?

the funny thing is that with cash in hand i would be torn between purchasing a
1969 camaro and i mean cherry
or
a 1960s fender strat, decent condition.

Yeah, the Strat pictured in my signature is a late 1964. I've had it 31 years now. It didn't cost me very much as it was in dire need of a paint job ... I chose the bright white you see. It's got the greenest pickguard I've ever seen and some of the nicest sounding pickups too.

Orville,

Have you considered soaking those bridge saddles in some WD-40 over a night? Then, brush 'em with a bronze wire brush. They'd probably look nice.
