Fender Input and All!

Sorted!

From a guy (Mark Kendrick) who says he personally finished around 46,000 guitars in his first year - good enough for all of us!

And some sensible input into the yawnsome nitro v polyester v polyurethane debate.

Oh, and some interesting circumstantial evidence for those wondering about production figures. 46,000 guitars finished by one guy in a year? Man!!! (How many is that per day? Per hour? ...Per minute??? )

Good post, Orvilleowner!

CV: I usually jump on those typos but opted out on this one for political reasons. I think the guys should give this one up and move on. Maybe the OTHER forum will be more of what is being sought here.

You notice I been sitting this one out myself. Unusual as that is.

Seemed like a trolling conflict for some reason.

Can't figure it out, CV. The 'best in the west' essentially answered his question for him and then he drags them into a shootout about the accuracy and veracity of their observations.

I'll should write him a script for Lexapro so he can go play his guitar in a relaxed state of mind.

How can a True Nitro Disciple deal with the fact that his supposedly "nitro finished" strat's finish is actually 35 to 40% poly!???!?

I thought the fact that Warmoth only "shoots" poly, but thinly, was sensible input.

Answer is quite simple. Like my local weather channel reminds us:
"Know before you go". Avoids crises of the spirit such as this, and ufboy's famous stretch of threads on the finishes for the Clapton guitar. :P :?

Hi

Fender USA confirmed me that all the reissue should be finished with nitro laquer. If the guitar doesn't react with acetone or anything, then it's should be a refinish.

A guy on other forum pointed me that the 12th hole for the pickguard should come from a deluxe model, that was poly finish, had americain tremolo.
modern deluxe should have a hole in the body and in the neck pocket, to distinguish it from american models, but in the beginning serie, mex maybe didnt' have these holes.
Maybe it's true, as I already saw mex guitar without these mark, especialy in the beginning.

And as you pointed out in the excellent article on fenderforum, the neck where tinted before be laquered, as I said, so my neck with tinted poly finish is a fake.

And as Mark Kendrick says on the article, all reissue ever had nitro finish on top of the poly undercoat, as the legend says.

So, do you think this body can be a old deluxe mex ?

Thanks for the help !

I have to put my pennies in the slot- as per the above comment, yes this is true- Fender shot nitro in mexico at one point in time (before Hway1 and road worn). now I am vague on the exact timing, but I think this was in 1997. there was a line of strats 'parts made in the USA' sent to mexico for finishing and assembly in mexico, and they were shot in nitro. They were the 'California series' line and were limited. There is a reason as to why these guitars were made, and this is were my mind becomes vague. I have seen two in NZ on a local trading site and both were finished in CAR- and both grossly overpriced for what they were!

As far as I am aware- I have never read any literature stating that fender shot poly finishes on AVRI line. I can remember a frontline back in '94 that had a black and white printed pull-out catalogue in the middle of the magazine stating nitro finish on AVRI. Of course I dont have those old magazines anymore, but if anyone does have them stowed away, do us all a favour and dig them out :) That's not to say they didnt shoot poly. If they did, would they tell us? Hmm.

as for the mentioned guitar, it's a fake. look at the sunburst- it doesnt look right. it does look like an "american standard" sunburst from the nineties, but not an AVRI 3 tone sunburst. I want to ask- are you suggesting this guitar is polyester or polyurethane? im thinking it may be a urethane finish, I doubt it's an mim body- it looks too nice.

And yes, there is always a nitro/urethane/poly debate. It really doesnt matter either because as in a previous post- they dont spray a body with nitro without a poly base these days. They dont make 'em like they used to- unless you have some coin for a MB CS strat. Is it worth all that money for a 100% nitro body? err... you can all draw conclusions.

On my Ultra, I can now distinctly see a line in the finish were the finish has shrunken a little into the wood- eventually poly does do it but it will take years and years and years before they will show signs of checking or anything like that- and if that DID occur, I would consider myself lucky

This is laughable. I just presented him with 2 identical guitars from the same year.

Can someone else tell him when spraying cellulose was outlawed and when fender had the plant re-fitted with a multimillion dollar extractor unit. Just so they could spray cellulose?

Wasnt it 98 or 97?

Vinnypop would have had 17 apparitions of the virgin Mary, a whole batch of alien abduction stories and rock solid proof that guitar was hand crafted by Jesus in 27AD, by now.

Yep! :D After asking the question I then did the sums and got something approximately similar. Though you'd have a better idea than me of the length of the working day and week in that part of the world.

126 per day, 5.25 per hour, huh? So you have him working a 24 hour day - we'd be a little softer on our employees in the Ceri Guitar Factory. Which explains why it takes me a couple of months to build a single guitar...

By the way, I see the issue of the round holes in the neck pocket and under the pickguard rearing it's ugly head in one of the posts above.

Anyone want to take that? I'm suddenly too tired to bother...

Cheers - C

I also noticed that there is no 'swimming pool' route, yet there is a 1993 stamp there in the cavity... perhaps not a fender body- but I think it's a nice body nonetheless

im confused :?
