One suggestion I read on some other forum was to find a short bolt with the same thread size as the trem arm. Screw that into the hole when you remover the trem arm to put the guitar into its case.

Thats exactly my feelings towards the trem arm. When I dont want it, it has to be out of the way. Its nothing to grab it. The spring just puts pressure on the threads of the arm. You dont need any pressure on them, it will eventualy strip them.

I am highly influenced by David Gilmour. I like to use the tremolo for very gentle vibratos. I guess I could get away vibrato with my fretting hand but it is not as natural for me as I've been guitars equipped with tremolos for 30 years.

Both Hendrix and SRV liked their trem arms swinging freely and it's awesome to watch them play. But for me--I like my arm sitting tightly between the Volume and #1 Tone. We all have our individual tastes right?

I've searched all over and did not find anyone that carried these little springs.
Even GC which you would think would have them.. since MF has them as mail order.

but nope.. I wrote Fender and they sent me one lonely spring in the mail.. but at least it was for free

Several sellers on eBay offer Fender OEM Tremolo Arm Springs in packages of 6.

Tremolo arm spring ? what is that ? I did not even know that there was such a thing ? I though the trem was just screwed into the hole that's it. Mine is an early 70's and it seems like the thread has been worned out because it can come out even after I screw it in. But I have been playing with it like that for years. Will the spring help ?

Hi Dan,

A lot of people don't know about the tremolo arm spring and lose theirs without even being aware of them. That was part of the reason I started this thread. Unfortunately, if the threads of your tremolo block is stripped then the spring won't be of much help as it exerts upward force against the tip of your tremolo arm. Replacing the block will fix that problem. The most recommended by the gurus of this forum is http://www.callahamguitars.com

On a related note: My new 2009 Standard Strat came with no trem spring, is that normal? It came shipped to me in it's gig bag with the trem arm loose, and no spring in the socket. Not that it matters much, I won't be using the tremelo, I'm just curious.
