PLEK

...it's quite an irritating name, I think. It's a CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled) set-up machine for guitars. "Plek" is just German for "plectrum" or guitar pick. There are a few videos around the place, well worth a look if you have some spare minutes.

A while ago I noticed that there was a shop down the road from me with a Plek machine, so thought I'd take the Ultra in as it hadn't really had anything done to it since 1992. Now I doubt it's been in better shape at any other time in its life... I think people get a bit sick of hearing me crap on about it, but it really is the best thing you can do for your guitar as far as giving it a general sprucing up goes.

First let this be a lesson learned to inspect a guitar thoroughly before buying, which includes little things like pulling back the strings to check the wear on the frets.

Every guitar I have ever played hard wound up needing a fret dress sooner or later and I have had only one guitar that ever needed a full refret and that was after 15 years.

I cant understand why you just cant get the frets dressed, unless the previous owner had one before and you just dont have enough fret wire left. A crown and polish should cost $100 the most and should be cheaper. I had my 85 62 reissue Tele refreted by 30st guitars in NY 6 years ago and it cost me $300, I would believe it is probably more today. Matty the owner who does the work did an amazing job. For those who say go buy a new neck unless it was a project guitar I would never get rid of an original neck especially one that I broke in to fit like a glove. You will also kill the value of your ax.

Just take it to another well known place and walk in like you know exactly what needs to be done and tell the guy I need my frets dressed. There is no way you are going to be able to play with them the way they are as you are going to stick in spots and bends in some spots are going to fret out and die. If you like the guitar that much just go and get it done as even with a new guitar out of the box if you are going to play the $@!& out of it these things are to be expected. Just look at your frets like tires on a car one day they are going to go bald and need to be changed. Even the vintage freaks dont frown upon fret jobs like they used to.
