Hi all, does anyone happen to know anything about how one might go about removing the original black Dot inlays on a strat neck, and putting in different new ones? I'm interested in the ones i have seen on an american deluxe tele. They are called something like moons, or half moons i believe. They look kind of like abalone, sorta kinda, you betcha! I imagine one would need to have a luthier do the job, eh? I also would like to know where the dots could be found, maybe an online source? Thanks very much!

A difficult job DaveMercier

As well as getting the old dots unglued from the board. Shaping and thicknessing the new dots to the perfect size. You will have to strip the clear lacquer from the neck and refinish it.

Not a task for the fainthearted on one of fender's top of the line necks. As Fhopkins said stewmac is the place to go for bits and fix.

I would just get a custom neck made from warmoth or someone, unless that Fender decal is super-important to you.

Dave If it's something you want to learn go to stewmac see what kind of tools you need. If your still interested then pickup a cheap neck off ebay and give it a try. If it turns out good sell the neck if it don't sell the tools. along the way I think you'll have a lot of fun and maybe a 2nd job. 8)

Several suppliers on Ebay make vinyl overlays that cling to the fretboard and cover your original markers (around $15). The overlays go on in minutes and look very good. My son has had some Bat overlays on his fretboard for a year and a half and they still look as good as the day they went on.
