Hi. I have both, an American Standard and an American Standard Deluxe. The American Standard is great but I think the sound on the Deluxe is much better. If you can afford the extra $100 I would recommend the Deluxe for the upgrade in pickups.

does the deluxe have more other than just better pickups. Maybe more tones? Or is the only difference better pickup system?

I don't know, I've played Deluxes and they don't seem at the time to be any better than my standard.

Look at the product spec page for each model.

Some of the main differences I think are
The American Deluxe has:
  • S1 Switching
  • There are different pups in each of the models
  • Locking Shaller staggered tuners
  • LSR roller nut (in the HSS model)
  • pop in whammy bar
  • "select alder" used in body

They are all good instruments, best to go to a shop and play around with each model to find the one you like :)

I've only owned a Mexican Standard and the Americean Deluxe HSS.
They feel and sound quite different.

I play left handed so it is hard for me to just walk into a store and test them out. I cant find any info on the S1 system. What is that?

It's a switch that allows you to get more tones out of you're guitar than the normal three-way does.

So it will have a couple more tones than the standard. Is that really worth it?

Actually most current strats have a 5 way switch, the S1 ups that to 10 pup combination options :)

If more tone combinations are worth it is up to you :)

The pups in each model are different too the deluxe has the sarium noiseless that also changes the sound.

Is maple or rosewoods neck just preference? No one is better than the other?

I have maple :)
Some people like rosewood because they feel it plays better, I could not tell the difference and I "think" it is softer and a bit harder to maintain.
Someone with more wood knowledge might be able to answer better :D

Depends on which you like. Maple is faster and brighter, rosewood is mellower and smoother.

So a fender strat deluxe for 1200 is a good deal. Any one know a place to get it cheaper?

Not sure what you mean by the Ash body? The 'Fender' Ash shelves have Swamp Ash (lighter weight by comparison in many cases) or Northern Ash. These are both still coming out of Corona or MIM, right?
