A very unscientific opinion, but to me, as long as it's not overpowering, a little bit of hum and hiss is like the sound of your gear talking to you.

(No, I have not been drinking!)

I think you're right on the money. As long as you can't hear it over the music, who cares?

Although they were silver, what you are describing sounds like the old Electro-Harmonics LPB-1.

It wouldn't fit in my recessed Tele cupjack without modifying and led me to reversing the Strat jack too. Yep, I had one of those too :

So they plug directly into the guitar jack after the cable? I've seen a youtube videos where it was plugged into the amp, while others have also reported plugging it into a guitar. Also, would it fit in a strat? My 84 japanese strat has the traditional input put, I was thinking about using it for that.

When I started playing way back in the mid-60s, this 60 cycle hum business wasn't ever talked about as it was typical of most guitars and basses. No one other than those with an electronics background would even know the 'proper' name/source and even for those of us who did, it was a big nothing for all intents and purposes.

As my peers and I progressed over the years, the vast majority of us ultimately gravitated towards Fenders and Gibsons as our #1 brands of choice. Between these two, we then wound up settling into one 'camp' or the other. Here too, the single coil hum was never really recognized. Rather, it was simply a given that most Gibsons didn't hum and most Fenders did. Either way, this too was irrelevant.

Three points here:

1. It is a blessing to my ilk that 60 cycle hum doesn't bother us one way or the other as a lot of tonality gets squelched when a humbucker (HB) replace a single coil (SC).

2. It is a shame that pickup manufacturers have hammered away at the general guitar playing populace over the years that 60 cycle hum is evil and must be eradicated by tossing your SCs and purchasing their stacked HBs with now, a predetermined sound. Compound this with all the chains of foot pedals (preamps) we older folk never had and now, all younger players are very sensitive to this 60 cycle hum as all these preamps do is just ramp it up exponentially.

3. I've said this before: Once the rest of the band joins in, 60 cycle hum is never heard.

Anyone have any other thoughts on the subject?

I count myself among the 60 cycle hum blessed. A few years ago, I installed a Rare Earth in a 00-15 Martin: I chose the single-coil version and it kicked!!!

Related to this discussion: obliquely, the need for "high output" pickups (mostly one trick ponies); the denial that a truly great Les Paul was ALWAYS not that common...and the "pickup industry" itself which relies upon the human guitarist need to keep modding the guitar more than the playing.

BTW, I am a fan of 60 cycle hum and the SC effect even when playing a Strat solo and singing. It is immediate and breathing...

Taken to extremes, the noiseless thing outside of Rock becomes the drippy sound of dentist office jazz...

I do NOT consider the SCN's on the American Deluxe Strat "deluxe." Frankly, though, I do have sympathies for even the great Tele players who opted for closer to noiseless options...

I see this thread on hum has been going on for a while and noticed there is no mention anywhere of the "Backplate Silent Single Coil System" that is listed on the Lindy Fralin website (http://www.fralinpickups.com/bpssc.asp) and I believe is made by Suhr. It claims to "eliminates the noise while completely retaining the sonic character of true single-coil pickups." Has anyone here tried this backplate? if so, what were your observations? They are mighty expensive!!

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I remember asking the forum for a suggestion on a 60 cycle hum solution a few months ago.
Of course, My fountain of knowledge and friend Martian agreed that I should get the Ebtech Hum X Hum Exterminator. ( I did ask the wife to get me that or x-mas , Pretty sure she did ....woooohooooo!!!....can't wait to try it out)
So that on top of good pup's ususally fix the problem.
Single or humbucking,doesnt matter.

Although sometimes I like the sound....It adds a human element to some of my recordings.

I dont have a problem at all with the good ole SC hum. My first guitar was a strat knock off with SCs, so its really the only thing i have been playing. One time i did try a guitar with humbuckers and it was dead silent. i was like whats wrong? Is thing thing even plugged in? Theres no hum, somethings wrong here! Lol i guess im just a true single coil guy, you can't beat the tone!

I had that the first time I plugged in my American Deluxe; Aside from being in awe of it's beauty, It has 3 single coils, (Sumarium Cobalt Noisless pup's) I was really in an odd spot. But I got used to it. But like I said sometimes I need that hum.
