Did anyone else notice the Gretsch Supertron that Akerman was using for the neck pup of his Les Paul?He got some cool tones from that combination as he had thepup switch in the mid position.

Is it just me? or does he work in the melodies from several nursery rhymes into that little solo?

Can you tell I dont like it.

Hocus Pocus all time rock classic, guitarist Jan Akkerman probably features in most talented guitarists ever, no doubt IMO and still at the top

But ultimately bloody boring. I've had more excitement watching Emmerdale farm. I really dont care how good a guitarist is, if their not entertaining they have failed as a entertainer. Why do we listen to music? To be entertained, not to think 'oh wow he's a great guitarist, yawn, I really must catch up on the gardening'.

Theres great guitarists/musicians everywhere. When they cant write a decent song they can only rise to prominence during a time of musical stagnation.

I utterly abhor prog rock, they should all have their fingers broken for the utter afront of it on my eardrums. What total crap.

Safe journey. Perhaps, by the time of your return, he will be down off Etna with some interesting pics for us.

That's a whole lotta bands, styles , the way I look at it is punk was spawned out of progrock/ rock & pop, Punk rock spawned new bloody wave, and as for entertainment value and why we listen to music sticking safety pins in your nose and gob on each other never entertained me apart from vivian in the young ones, the clash at times and possibly Sids rendition of my way, I listen to music because it's something I love doing, and the more equiped the musician is to deliver to my ears their love of music whether its guitar, drums , piano or their voice etc etc the better.
Just an explanation Niki , no convincing you I know but there you go, but thats my take on it 8)

Yeah but the thing is with punk that its not only a musical style, its a mental state. Musicaly its all encompassing, rock, rock'n'roll, ska, reggae, metal, its all there. It went on to spawn hardcore, thrash, speed metal, a lot of the NWOBHM bands were heavily influenced by it. The New Romantics, Electro (ala thompson twins then also I suppose techno), indie, grunge probably even that Emu music that everyone cuts their wrists along to. Never mind the protest folky stuff it helped revive either.

Anyway Ripitup as requested heres your rating.

Lots more than five.

   I would have gone with the phrase 'navel gazing' Thanks for the very disconcerting mental image!!

BTW i would think 'the Village people' or maybe 'Frankie Goes to Hollywood' would fit more into your new category than Focus!
