Ceri, top notch. How would you rate Plymouth Gin versus Tanqueray? I'm a Tank guy myself, but wouldn't mind broadening my palette. Thanks for the update, can't wait to see the next one.

HA! Well now we have this thread back on track - thank you! :D

I spend half my life not 20 miles from the Plymouth Gin factory, and I'm prepared to admit I know the inside of that establishment moderately well (spot my Fender Forum T-shirt):
Image

When you tour the Plymouth factory they give you a tasting where they put their gin alongside a glass of Gordons and invite you to observe the difference. And indeed the Plymouth has noticeably more in the way of herbs and spices - "botanicals".

In turn, Gordons is considered one of the more botanical of the mainstream gins compared to Tanqueray or Bombay Saphire (which I used to drink a lot), so that gives you a slight idea of what Plymouth is like. Put Gordons alongside Tanqueray and then imagine going a little further in the same direction.

However. Plymouth Gin used to be a genuinely and seriously botanical gin, but over the decades has been toned down a lot to appeal to the international market - which is a big shame, I think.

I couldn't be sure, but I'm guessing if you want to know what Plymouth might have been like in the good ol' days you should try a Dutch Genever Gin. Often it comes in attractive stoneware bottles; Bols is a well-known brand to look out for, though there's more characterful ones to find too. Genever is seriously flavorsome gin; very different from stuff to which you'd normally add tonic.

Give it a try - highly recommended.

Oh, and Plymouth do a very nice Sloe Gin, if you're in a Joe Bonamassa kind of a mood...

My thoughts. :D

Cheers - C

PS For Americans: that Plymouth Gin factory is about 100 yards from the exact spot the Mayflower set sail from. So that's nice, isn't it?

that is way too cool.
hey ceri, with your craftsmanship and meticulous care, i would pass this guitar off as "CERI CUSTOM SHOP MASTERBUILT PLYMOUTH GIN EDITION"
by the way, in that picture, your gait looks a little less than stable. just a little.

Johnny is that a bit of blistering to the right of the main area of damage?

It looks to me like you'd need to clean the area up a bit. Get rid of any blistering thats on there then perform a drop fill repair.

There's plenty written about it, but this is a great starting point.
http://www.stewmac.com/tradesecrets/ts0040_lacquerfill.hzml

The writer of that page will sell you everything you need too.

By no means attempt this on purely my say so. Guitar finish's are not a area that I'm comfortable with. Wait for someone else to chime in. They'll likely want more pictures.

Great useful info nikininja. Funny how I fell better just knowing the ding can be fixed. Knew one of u guys would pull through.

Also, this helps keep the thread alive until Ceri returns.

Thxs again

I just admire great work. I have no idea how to fix it. Mechanical, I can help. Cosmetic? I'm a newbie...

Guys, you are not kidding! I've been away from this thread for less than 24 hours and look at everything that's arrived in that time! Great Scott!

Ceri I'm never taking that body back, ever. Infact after your recent act of tolerance and understanding... etc

Haven't a notion what that means. [Thinks for a moment - then glances at Ebay.] Oh, I see: you've pulled it already. Did it work out safely? No nasty scenes at the roadside? Excellent - well done, man!

And to everyone else - what the heck are these two talking about...???

Just admit you painted it red to tempt me eh?

I absolutely admit it, yes! :D

On which: my helpful assistant just arrived home from an amazingly long hair appointment and has now lent a hand with metering issues over the photography (she's much better with a camera than me in any case). Unfortunately, by this stage the light is going where I live, so the following are a little dark. But importantly, they do represent the color more accurately than my previous hopeless efforts:
Image

As you can see, I've used the morning to get that latex binding mask off:

One more shot, against the light:
Image

Far from perfect pics, but better than before at least.

Wotchathink? Wineburst drop-top super-Strat, anyone? (You can still change your mind, Ninja...)

There is a small amount of tidying up to do here and there along the edges of the faux binding - a quick bit of wet-and-dry and my tiny brushes will deal with that.

Then I just have to clearcoat, which I will do over two days, three thin coats per day. And then it is just waiting time while the lacquer hardens, then buffing - and then this bod is done! [Gasps with relief!!!]

Cheers - C

Ah mate that thing is stunning. I'm literaly weeping here. Even the missus asked, "how much do you owe him for it, are you getting it back then?" when I just showed her. Then started huffing and puffing about another guitar.

Enjoy it mate you've earnt it.

No nasty roadside scenes. The guy was a perfect gent. I did arrive half hour early so I could pick my spot to watch him arrive and see if there were a gang of blokes in the car. Spent the time adjusting my hair to highlight facial scars and bending my many times broke nose round to my right. Just trying to look like someone you dont want to attack.

Anyways he played me highlights his bands upcoming cd, some very tasty stuff on there from the sounds of it.

Anyways can you tell me your thoughts regarding the Bare Knuckles Sultans Set? I've found a place selling them for £148.

Fabulous! This whole thread was worth it just for that paragraph! Thank you!!! :D :D 8)

Well I love 'em! I'm just not clever enough to tell you exactly which other maker's set they compare to - CS69s or DiMarzios or whatever. But they give me as close to that Dire Straits By Dire Straits sound as we're likely to find anywhere, which obviously is the idea - and at the price I should think so too!

£148 is better than Bare Knuckle themelves offer them for, but only a bit. £165 on their website:

http://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk/sho ... ucts_id=73

Though in the end I bought their whole preloaded pickguard. I shopped around and found I just couldn't quite match the price buying the pups and parts seperately. I can't fault the quality of the work, either - here's the inside of the one I bought:

(For anyone who's confused this is a different project we're talking about. Fear not, I'm not planning to slap that pickguard on the Pyrocaster!)

Hi Hop: the photos are rather dark and grainy - but they do actually show more or less what the color in fact looks like. Kinda glowing a bit in the middle, do you think? It'll look richer with a clearcoat on top buffed to a mirror finish.

Getting there! ...Phew!

Cheers - C

Hi Doc: I'm struggling to remember which pickups are in the Pensa-Suhr / Knopfler guitars? EMGs, were they?

Anyhow: we were all much younger when I posted a pic of the innards this guitar will get. It's to be EMG's SA set - hence the battery compartment on the back:

People who were young when this thread started are now dandling their grandchildren on their knees, so I hear...

So it seems we have the makings of Ceri's version of The Red Strat. Do you have the EXP and SPC pots in there as well? The Knopfler MKI is available with customers choice of electronics. I believe Knopfler has EMG's in an HSS configuration.

You know, the more I learn, the more I think of it, that I really didn't give that DG-20 a fair shot. T'was a neat guitar too. The guitar collector's fate I suppose. Man...the Pensa-Suhr Alain let go was a beauty.!!

Look'in good mate! Carry on.

I don't remember the topic of the thread we were on, but posted a Pensa-Suhr in a beautiful dark wood finish. Had a Floyd bridge. Sold it to a business colleague as a 'thankyou' favor.

OK it is official....Ceri....you are entering groupie fandom level here. You will from this day forth have people asking about the ceri custom shop master built series thread.....put your shingle out....I can see it now "Ceri CS Masterbuilt Guitars....where things are done the right way".........all I have is a MIM, which I love but compared to a Ceri CS Masterbuilt...WHOA .......when you start crankin 'em out I would like a Ceri CS masterbuilt with the union jack on the front with Ceri CS sensor pups, and......and.....and  of course you could just fashion it out of a tree stump from the queen's tea garden and some wires from your car  but seriously your talent is amazing....and I am very serious about the union jack guitar.... 8)
