Gee...I have an original 65 Strat body and neck that was badly altered by a poor "restoration"attempt in 75 and I installed the original hardware in an after market neck and body.I wonder if I could find some talented craftsman to undertake such an ambitious project, hint, hint, nudge, nudge, lol.

Ceri is a wealth of knowledge! This stuff is good! I thought about making my own guitar, but after all this work, I'd be afraid to try. There is more skill here then I ever thought possible.

Can you please show us some pictures of the poor thing?

That would help convince some of the need for pity ...

You have to love Newfies.

So is there going to be a signup list for guitars? From what I've seen everybody is clammering to be the next Ceri project. I hope that he agrees to do another. And I hope is Wife understands. Rule #1, keep the Mrs. happy.

If Ceri was to do another project, maybe people could post pictures of their disasters and we could all vote on the next. Or Ceri could just choose which one he wants to do.

Back to the finish. Sandpaper is a god-send, it can fix almost any painting mishap. How deep of Crimson are we talking.

Ceri, sorry again so late with this post. Maybe someone can tell me why I've stopped getting update emails on this thread? I just have to keep remembering to come back.

Anyway I wanted to comment that the first photo in the last group that showed the back side of the guitar was excellent. You asked about the photo quality and the shot came out quite nicely and provides a good representation of the finish smoothness.

Sometimes the best ways to get a nice shot of your guitar is to get that light "glare or reflection" on the body. You normally wouldn't think about it but if that body was sanded and polished glossy it would have reflected the light so well that you could then tell what the light source was. That's why sometimes shooting a black guitar is tough because it wants to reflect anything in front of it and its usually the photographer.

Most pro photographers would use a light box to cast a reflection in a specific place. You can make a light box or they can be purchased relatively cheaply. The cheapest ones are a opaque fabric that fits over a photo lamp. You adjust the amount of reflection by the size and position of the box. That's why sometimes when you see those really cool photos of sports cars there is a white line reflecting off the body contours. But of course those shots are done in a controlled environment with big money gear. (and that's good money that could have been spent on GUITAR gear) I have a small light box that's about 2 foot square and I line it up so it reflects off the body countours to portray the smoothness and glossiness of the finish of the guitar I'm photographing.

But Ceri managed to create the exact same idea to highlight the body finish and contours with the available light source that he had. Unless of course he is holding out and managed to whip up a pro light box out of scrap wood and extra light fixtures that he had lying around while waiting for the finish coats to dry. (That wouldn't surprise me)

Here's a sample of a body that I shot of a Highway One that was buffed to give it a shine. I needed to show a potential buyer what the finish looked like and added the reflection to give a better sense of the not quite smooth finish.

Ooo - gotta say: I don't have a mission statement, but if I did it would be about encouraging everyone to have a go. This stuff is open to all. In this whole thread you are seeing little in the way of glamorous tools and my workshop is a couple of Workmates on the patio.

It's within everyone's reach. Jump in! :D

 Heehee! Behind the scenes I am finding myself bombarded with people offering me their wrecked guitars to fix. And earlier on this thread Mr Kong even offered to shoot his Strat with a gun just so's I could put it back together!

However, I'd kinda like to be not only the guy who humorously fixes guitar that can't be fixed. (Though guitslinger's '65 is a tempting challenge...)

I have at least a couple more projects planned for later in the year, but it is high time to build something from scratch. Actually, that's much easier and those will be significantly shorter threads - but I'll try and work in a few amusing little twists to keep things interesting. Gotta go the extra mile here at the home of the Stratocaster! :D

Haha - nope, it's just a spot on the carpet near a window. I figured that for the "presentation" shots I needed to keep the lighting the same over time, so's at least we're comparing like with like as the job proceeds.

Late '70s my dad's then-girlfriend was a good pro photographer. She showed me how to use her darkroom and tried to teach me some stuff - it was at that point I discovered I just couldn't remember an F-stop from an ISO and hold that stuff in my head from one day to the next. 'Fraid if this thread shows nothing else it is that I ain't ever going to be a decent photographer... :(

However:

Even I can see that that is skillful photography. Far as showing the exact texture of the lacquer - you nailed it. Respect! 8)

Later - C

fhopkins, Thankyou for finding that other thread. I am gonna search through some old stuff here in a bit. Ill post up whatever I can find. 8)

Ceri, you are forcing me to learn patience!
It would be hard for me to go to sleep without trying to fix whatever flaws I made that day. I guess your confidence in your abilities comes with experiance.
It would seem you have a plan B in the event you get tired of you current job!

Hi Twelve Bar I live just about 1/2 hour from St. John's,I already know quite a few competent techs and luthiers but if you know of any I'd be glad to get their names.Orvilleowner I never thought about posting pix of the remains, great idea,it doesn't look pretty. After I dismantled it I stripped Off the clear varnish that the"restorer"had put on after stripping off the sunburst finish I tried to applly what was supposed to be a transparent charcoal stain,it wasn't.The body now looks absolutely grotesque and if I ever get it back together it will have to be a solid colour.Pringle420,I don't know if you are aware but most Newfoundlanders and Labradorians take great offence to the term"Newfie"so much so that here it is refered to as the other"N" word. The term Newfie originated during WW II when American soldiers stationed here used it in a derogatory manner.I'm sure you meant no offence by it but if you used that term in front of the wrong person you may get the same response you'd get for using the other "N" word.Just giving you a heads up.

Tiny update today. I sanded and I sprayed...

Here's the wet-sanding, partly to get out that defect of yesterday and mostly just the levelling process:
Image

Then I sprayed some more sanding sealer build layers. Look at the picture in yesterday's post of a spraygun pointing at the body if you somehow can't imagine what that looks like.

I'm also carrying a thin coat of sanding sealer around onto the back above the red undercoat, so that if I have an error with the top coat I can sand back to this point without risking going through into the red and having to do that again too. Precautionary.

I don't however need clear sanding sealer building up in the cavities where it might affect the fit of the battery case and the control cover, so I've put my little card lids in those spots to prevent it. ...I'm struggling to find anything to photograph to keep y'all amused - can you tell? :D :
Image

An that really is it - this ain't a photogenic part of the process. :?

And a spot of frustrating (for all of us) news: I have to do another of my disappearing acts for a couple of days, I'm afraid. Running round like a scalded earwig trying to do a zillion things including finishing this body before going away, but I just couldn't pull it off - sorry. I can carry a laptop with me, but not this project.

I'll be home Monday night and then we truly will bring this thing to a close...

Till then - C
