Are there any guesses to what color Ceri intends to shoot over that red?

Someone should see if they can scrounge up any of ceri's old build threads to browse through when this build is finished. As always, very imressive work.

Ceri,

Great job with that binding strip. It is a lot of time consuming work, but I really think it'll pay off in the end. I know you don't like giving pre-views to what's next, But are you going to put another colour on as well?

I remember following the Adventure of the blue Strat like it was yesterday, it turned out beautiful and set the bar pretty high. In my opinion this project has smashed that bar.

Can't wait for more.

Hi guys: in this case there's no need to be secretive. I plan a medium dark 'burst in red, with the darkest color at the edge being carried right across the back. Kind of a "crimson burst", perhaps.

Ever since I got that top successfully fixed onto the front I've been kicking myself that I wasn't braver and risked a finer piece of figured timber - oh well, another time. Anyhow, truth is there's not much to look at in this wood, so I mean to have it just showing through the finish but not emphasised. The effect is intended to be: "Ooo, a crimson burst - and a touch of flame just visible underneath."

That way, maybe it'll look like there's more under the lacquer than there really is. We have to cut our coat according to our cloth...

This is photo number 300 (!!!):
Image

Little rolls of paper to stop lacquer building up in the bridge bushing holes. We don't want to interfere with the fit, and we don't want lacquer cracking as the bushings go in.

Now I need to shoot a few thin coats of clear sanding sealer over the front in order to get it to a nice smooth surface like the back, ready for the top coats. Also, I need enough over the faux binding that I can sand out the little ridge along where it joins the lacquer that has gone onto the sides and back (this is a bit blurry: can't seem to spray and photograph at the same time):
Image

In that shot I'm using my smaller touch-up spray gun, simply because it has a much smaller and more wieldy reservoir on top, appropriate to the small quantity of material being used. However, that might have been a bad idea, because I am less familiar with the little quirks of this gun and have been a bit heavy handed with my spraying...

This is a "warts and all" thread, so we have to be honest with the mistakes. Here's one:
Image

At a glance that looks like the famous "orange peel". However, in fact it is something slightly different. I have just allowed the gun to point in one direction too long in that spot and got a small puddle of lacquer. The top of that puddle has started drying and forming a skin while there is still liquid material underneath, which has allowed the skin to move and pucker. It's pretty much the effect you get when mud dries and cracks on the surface.

The good thing about finishing is there are few real disasters. Most things are reversible, and all we have to do in this case is let it harden overnight (again!), sand it out tomorrow and respray.

Given that I will be spraying and sanding this clear build layer two or three times anyhow to get a perfect flat surface it probably doesn't even delay things. Just looks cack-handed!

There ya go: you get the unvarnished truth here! (Pun intended.)

Cheers - C
