Ceri, with regards to getting the color come out on the photo, it depends on your camera, but if you have the option for custom white balance you may be able to get a little bit closer to the real color. Usually AWB or auto white balance does the trick but it doesn't do so well on these vibrant colors.

For our comercial Break as we await the next episode of Ceri's project I thought I would show everyone what the differences are when you shoot with auto white balance and then another shot with custom white balance. As I said earlier you can set white balance with a white or gray sheet of paper. I used a little gadget called an Expo Disc that you put over your lens and shoot at your subject in the light you are working with. Here are the before/after results on my Custom Shop ShowMaster Quilt top.

Shot with camera's auto white balance. (Canon 5D)

Shot with Custom White Balance using the Expo Disc. (Canon 5D) This better represents a closer representation of the burt color.

That's a great little photography lesson. Thanks for that. Beautiful guitar. Crazy quilting.

What is the weather report in Pelham?

To expand on that, many things can affect color - especially when using auto white balance.

Avoid using AWB in a tungsten light source (regular household bulbs). There has never been an AWB technology that can accurately correct tungsten light - it will always be way too warm (yellow). For that matter don't use the tungsten white balance setting either - it will still be much too warm. Use a custom white balance as suggested, or be prepared to correct it afterwards. If you include something in the frame that should be neutral in color (any shade of grey - a white piece of paper or black pickguard, for instance), it's relatively easy to achieve correct color with your image editing program after the image is taken. Otherwise, you can color correct by eye, but that takes a certain amount of experience.

In one of the episodes, Ceri explained his hand were blue because it was cold. It may have been cold, but that's not the reason they appeared so blue. The overall color balance was off and the entire image was blue. Notice the reamer also has a blue tinge as well as the black power tool in the upper left.

And here's the corrected version where I used the upper left power tool as my neutral reference - not so blue now:

Someone mentioned that vibrant colors can throw off AWB, but that's not entirely correct. What matters most is HOW MUCH of a color is included in the scene. If a single color dominates the scene, it will definitely throw the color balance out of whack. However, if a color (even a vibrant one), is only a small part of the frame, it really won't affect color balance.

The "auto features" (auto color, auto exposure), of today's cameras are great but remember they will only work well for "average" scenes. If you take a closeup of a bright red Strat - that's NOT an average scene and all that red color will influence the color balance. The technology is good, but it's also stupid. It doesn't know if you're shooting an outdoor landscape (an average scene), or a black cat in a coal mine. It'd handle the first situation fine but be a total disaster in the second -- you have to know when to rely on it and when to ignore it.

In general, AWB works best in daylight (sunlight) and fairly good in fluorescent light (but not perfect). It will work ok in shade, overcast and window light, but may still be too blue (which is probably what happened to Ceri's hands). If the scene is lit by tungsten light, it will be completely off as already mentioned.

Ceri-
I hope you don't mind me using your pics as examples and pardon the photo interruption while we eagerly await your return. This is my first post in this amazing thread but please know I hang on every entry and can't wait to see the final results!

But "touching up" nikininja's body? Seriously? That's like saying WWII was a little spat!

I mentioned in my earlier post that I used a filter called Expodisc to set my white balance. It's certainly a more expensive way to set white balance BUT, it's an easier way to get it done in any condition your shooting in. Here is a link at B&H which is a popular photo store in NY, showing the disc. It's about 100.00 USD depending on the size. You can find them cheaper or used on eBay.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/buy/White-Balance/ci/9630/N/4289364509

I purchased the largest one to fit my largest size lens (diameter size). It just clips directly to the front of your existing DSLR lens. On the smaller diameter lens I just place it in from and make the shot. There are a wide variety of sizes including square mounts.

This probably is too elegant an option for point and shoot cameras but if you have a Digital SLR (has removeable lens) then you can take this along with you wherever you go and you will find that you photos will be much more accurate. Stratshooter correctly pointed out that vibrant colors doesn't throw off the white balance. I was stating the Average White Balance (AWB) doesn't work so well with vibrant colors.

In effect AWB doesn't work accurately with any colors. Point being that vibrant colors would be more noticeable or at least you would have a better frame of reference as it relates to whether the color was reproduced accurately. Hence the reason Ceri pointed out that the stain color on his Strat was not entirely accurate. It's those types of shots that you find yourself saying something like, "here's a shot of my new guitar, it's great but the color is just a little different than the photo shows".

Check the dates. The actor in these commercials could be Ceri's father. Ceri's alive and well. Just a little r'nr that's all.

I think you'll find Austin Powers's cohort Miss Felicity Shagwell bought it from a scrapyard in Droitwich and decided to restore it inbetween films.

Maybe Ceri is The Stig's alter ego and he's off racing Ferraris and Lambos.
