Good grief: last time I looked at this thread a few hours ago we were still on page one!!!

Halfway through uploading some pics, but I don't have time to post them now cos I'm running out the door. Going to a gig - Handel's Messiah... :D

I'll log on later tonight and show you some progress. Patience, people!

Cheers all - C

With a topic title like this, it kinda draws attention, eh?

I have jam tonight, but will check later...might be on page 85 or so by then? :?

That body is a mess! But if recostructive surgery is your thing, I'll enjoy seeing the end result of your labors. Myself, I would more than likely have purchased a replacement body (unless you intend to do some "wazoo" custom paintwork on it.)

But that my friend is the fun part. I have heard great things about the "mad skillz" Mr.Ceri has.

Yeah - this is the "master at work" stuff. Much more entertaining that just slapping parts together.

Hi guys: looks like I don't need to come back till sometime in the New Year. You're doing fine...

OK, to business.

First we need to take some careful measurements of how this bod was at the start - before whatever we are going to do to it. So's we can return it to stock if necessary. ...Erm...:
Image

I have a growing collection of sheets like that covered in guitar measurements. One day there'll be some use for them. Oh, and I took a little tracing of where the output jack cavity is in relation to the bridge. Dunno why, but I feel that might come in handy...

Now I think we have to face the fact that this blue paint can't be saved. So before we can do anything else with Nick's body we will need to strip it. (Any comments, mthorn00?) Heat is my preferred method:
Image

It's sensible to start with the fiddly bits, so the paint still on the face of the guitar prevents it from getting scorched:
Image

Can you see that the black scorching in the spring cavity is under that sealer layer? So that didn't come from Nick's flambé effort - someone has been this way with a heat gun before. I seem to recall that Nick had this body from friend - is that right? I think there's more history to this one than we know.

And that crack's a bit scary, isn't it?

Next the edges:

Now that has already revealed some more problems we didn't know about. Here the sections of body timber have started to delaminate:
Image

Here is where a previous refinisher has slightly over sanded the timber and had to rebuild it with filler to get the neck plate to sit flat:
Image

Here we discover a very cracked sealer layer beneath the paint. All of that will need to be prepped completely smooth:
Image

And there are more and more bumps and scrapes showing themselves, all of which will need to be addressed before a new finish can go on:
Image

Here's the bod with the edges stripped:
Image

And here's the back and front once the heat gun has done its stuff:
Image

Image

Gotta say, that has a certain wrecked visual charm to my eye. Relics are not my thing, but I'm tempted to follow people's suggestions and reassemble it like that!

But I won't.

Tomorrow the reconstructive surgery begins.

Cheers all - C
