Ceri i have to say that i don't usually visit the strat forum but i read in another post of this rebuild job you're doing. I am glad you are sharing this very impressive piece of work. I'm hooked on the progress of this build now and can't wait to see the finished results. I admire your skills and knowledge pertaining to guitars. It look really good so far. 8) :)

very cool Ceri,

I like the EMG SA pickups. Really a good setup. One can also pickup some nice little modules like the EXG - Guitar Expander, and the SPC - Presence Control. Gilmore uses one of these on his Strat. (Can't remember which.) Here is what they look like in a Strat I built a few years ago using the SA pickups:

I have a couple extra goodies on here as well, such as the extra middle center knob (other small black one, off to the side) is a tone push/pull pot which cuts the mid-range of the neck and bridge pickups and adjusts them as a standard tone control.

Really like your thread!!!!!!!

Here's the vital question.

Whats in the cup this time?

Image

I must say mate. Your like the A Team of woodworking. A few clamps, a drill, a bit of filler. Next thing you know theres some aural assault happening.

[EDIT]

One other thing. Are you going with a front mounted jacksocket? The other drop top experts seem to prefer sidemounts.
Lets face a fact here. This bloke doesnt have a patch on you for taste.

...I guess I made a rod for my own back, didn't I? That is very nice Taylor's of Harrogate tea, thank you very much. The best cup of tea on the planet. So there.

Stay tuned. All I'm saying: there might have been a reason for the tracing of the position of the jack socket on page three of this thread...

BTW: One thing I notice about drop tops is that when they do the faux binding they generally bring the top of the guitar to a sharp edge, not a rounded Fender style one. There's a reason for that - on which more later. However, suffice to say: I don't like that detail. I'd be looking for a better way. Again, stick around...( )

Hi Tanner: no pickguard for this one. It ain't the finest piece of top wood we've ever seen by a long, long way. But such as it is, let's not cover it up. That's my thinking, anyhow.

Hi Xhefri: one of the many good things about your thread is that it beautifully shows top quality electronic installation going on. I'd been feeling a little guilty that this SA set of mine comes with the harness mostly ready hooked up, because it means I won't be showing much soldering on this thread. Now I feel much better about that: if folks want to see high level wiring they only need look at your stylish work.

:D Between you and Russ Georgia is going to be just one drunken blur to me, isn't it? Thank you kindly - I definitely have Georgia on my mind! 8)

And to everyone: thank you as always. More later...

Cheers - C

Hi Ceri....quick question, oh Sherpa....

In an earlier post you mentioned that you prefer Wilkinson bridges. Why? What do you prefer about them?

Ha; OK. Well on that VS100 model I like the feel of the saddles under the palm. And I like that you screw the saddle down into position - I'm sure not getting into the "sustain" argument, but I guess that feature don't hurt your sustain at any rate.

(Not unique I know, but) I also like that there is a little grub screw to adjust the turning motion of the trem arm so you can have it exactly how you want. I like mine to just stay put where I place it, but be loose enough I can flick it out the way with the merest touch of a finger.

The VS100 has a nice heavy sustain block which feels positive. It also has a stagger on the holes the strings emerge from the block through, so that each one addresses its saddle at pretty much the same angle. Can't for the life of me notice that that feature matters in real life - but I like the attention to detail.

Lastly, the pivot posts can be set to height and then locked with a screw-within-a-screw, which again kinda feels firm and positive.

All of that said, I don't remotely suggest this is the ultimate bridge. It's just one I like. When I play my stock Fenders with their Fender bridges they feel absolutely good to me. I'm not busy worrying that they don't have VS100 bridges.

It's not at all a vital choice. It's just the one I often go with.

Though I've also been examining the new-ish VS401 and VS401V models, respectively these (can't find a picture of the VS401 in silver but it's out there):

You are designing a contoured heel on this body and it appears you will use some form of grommet inserts there. Or am I mistaken?

I wonder if there is enough stress on a neck-pocket that you need to be cognizant of load factors when you introduce a contoured heel to a body that wasnt designed for one. (I hope that makes sense)

If you have thought about that, what did you conclude?

I have thought about it and concluded - that I hope it'll be OK!

Seriously, as I worked I took it as far as seemed reasonable without weakening the wood unduly. That's a heavy old bit of ash I've put in there and I somehow feel the join with the original poplar or basswood (whichever - still not sure) if anything actually strengthens that area by virtue of the de facto lamination.

If I remember my history (though I may have it wrong) contour heels originally came about when the likes of Jeff Beck had the feature added to existing guitars that, as you say, were not designed with that in mind. I've a notion Jeff Beck's '50s Tele-Esquire now carries a contour heel in addition to the forearm contour he's had sliced into it - is that right?

Dunno if Beck's Esquire was the first contour heel. Probably not, but it was certainly an early example.

And after all, the contour heel on MIA Deluxes is just a regular heel with the corner cut off. I didn't want to move the screw hole like on a Deluxe so I stopped short of removing so much timber. So hopefully if anything I've underdone it, rather than over.

But time will tell!

Them's my thoughts, anyhow...

Cheers - C
