Well, yeah.

Its easy to go overboard with flames, so I personaly wouldnt choose them for fret inlays. Jackson did it on this

I think it looks a bit tacky, and wouldnt really suit maple. Even if the inlays were red and orange.

I reckon a phoenix or even a copy of a box of

Across 2 or 3 frets may look good.

...so what neck shall we have on the guitar?...

Now then. That opens up a whole new line for discussion. As it happens, I have an idea of my own about a neck (on which more later), but delighted to listen to other thoughts...

To Shredd6: this is the moment to mention that I am only too aware we have real carpenters, joiners and cabinet makers here on the Forum. I well know that all this must look like kindergarten stuff to your eyes - you'd do this entire job in an afternoon and do it better.

Thank you for being gentle with my extremely humble efforts! :D

Shredd, I particularly like the flame job on the second guitar you pictured. Some elegant masking going on with that one.

Regarding the pickguard issue: I have seen painting and even photographs applied across the fronts of guitars including the pickguard and sometimes even the pickup covers. Presumably that must be an acrylic based paint - but even so I'd be concerned about the long-term adhesion of it to the plastic. But maybe I'm worrying unnecessarily?

Anyway, here are some funky finishes:

http://www.simscustom.com/html/sprayshop_artwork.htm

A lot to think about there...

To Russianracehorse: that is a neat phoenix picture - that would make a cool design. We'd love to see that coin you did if you care to post it? And I am charmed you even remember that etched neckplate...

And to everyone: I'm continually knocked out by the friendliness of all the comments. Really makes it fun to do - thank you!

More later.

Cheers - C

As far as a name for the guitar, I like Toastercaster..

So Nikki, are you asking for ideas about an inlay for the neck??

YZFJOE, thats some killer flame painting that guy does. It would be cool on a guitar.

I like Toastercaster.
How about little sticks with roasting marshmellows for inlays?

 Oh. Then I'm afraid I'm immediately about to blow that one out the water, because there is to be no trem cover. Sorry :( . Read on...

A look back at the early pictures of the stripped body will show that Nikininja has previously decided he doesn't like trem covers and so filled the screw holes before painting over the back of the guitar.

However, the blue lacquer he put on had already sunk a little in those holes and even if I refill will do so again. Like The Ninja I also don't need a trem spring cover, so I am going to do away with those holes - but by a slightly different method.

First, I drilled the holes out a little way down to make them round and tidy. Then I refilled them, but only to within half a millimetre of the surface:
Image

Plenty to see in that pic. There is a small piece of 0.6 mm thick veneer and I have used a hole punch (for leather belts) to cut out little circles of wood exactly the right size to cap those holes. Once in place they sit slightly proud of the surrounding wood. I touched in a drop of glue and tickled the caps into place with the little metal tool you see on the right.

Also, there is a part of the back of the block cavity that has disintegrated with the burning, so I have chiselled that out and cut a little fillet of ash to glue in, with the grain working in the same direction as the body.

Once the glue was dry I used the cabinet scraper to make the veneer screw hole caps flat to the body. Just for the heck of it I used this cutesome little Sloane finger plane to level the edge repair:
Image

Here are the repairs levelled and done. Not necessary in this case but I took the trouble to line up the grain on the veneer hole caps with that of the surrounding wood. They nearly vanish - but it is not quite an invisible mend! No matter: the finish I have planned will cover them (oops, what a giveaway...):
Image

Now. Let's get aggressive.

I thought of different ways of doing the following, but in the end I just put some suitably sized hole saws on the pillar drill and set about punching the back out of the control cavity:
Image

Till it looked like this:
Image

Then I turned the guitar over and used a small drum sander to tidy up the edges of that new hole, which also took off some more of the carbonised wood:
Image

Not everyone was expecting that - I hope? :D

More on that... tomorrow.

Cheers - C

hahaha classic. The worst of being followed back from the post office, is that I only live 200 yards from it. Quite disconcerting when theres no place to shake a tail.

We know its going to turn out classy. Thats why I sent it to you.

Absolutely true.
Did you ever hear the saying "still waters run deep". Well the Marianas trench is working on that guitar body.

Dont mess with him, I heard that even Mossad tremble in his presence.

Ceri, your wish is my command. This is the coin I designed for the 2003 Dining Out of the 352d Information Operations Squadron, Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii:

Everyone who attended the event got one. It was a great party! 8)

By the way, my scanner makes the flat parts of the coin appear darker than they really are. In fact, the entire coin is silver in color.

Okay, break's over. Back to work!

Hi RR: that really is too cool! Great job - respect to you.

And that would look good on a neckplate too. Hmmm [thinks...]
