This reminds me of the soap operas my wife used to watch on t.v. It is reminiscent of the plot where the patient who is near death (Niki's guitar body) is gradually brought back to health over a period of episodes by the brilliant young Doctor (Ceri). The rest of us are the audience who are left hanging each day waiting for the next episode. Keep up the good work Dr. Ceri.

"Young" - that's all I need; that'll do me! Thank you!! :D

And with that:

G'night all - C

Ceri I really enjoy watching the steps of repair with your online pictures of this project. I looked at that charred strat body and thought what a shame you will never play again.

You look at it and can foresee a solution to make it look new and be able to sing once again. You are an amazing visionary and craftsman. My hat is off to you.

Thanks for posting I look forward to seeing the next step of the project.

I'll hazard a guess: you're going to route out a section, but not plug it, because you are going to install an active system of some kind: circuit board and battery.

I still say you should convert it to a hard tail -- tele tail it as niki said!

No the strat I received from a friend was a Encore (sub £100). I was pretty down and out at the time, suffering a lot of depression from a divorce. I'd sold my previous guitars (dean and charvel) along with 2 stacks and a load of rack gear. And used the money to pay for the wedding, all at my exwifes request.
I'd ignored fender guitars up until that point. After being given such a magical gift that did so much for me in restoring my psyche (I mean I really was down, close to being sectioned at my parents request). I had to get the real thing. Next tax rebate I got (around 2k) I took to musical exchanges. Played the guitar the body of which you have alongside some very nice CS and other productionline pieces and had to have it. Even the 10K playboy didnt hold up against the feel of that neck. A definate anomaly that still captivates my attentions more than my customshop, deluxe, or hotrod guitars.

Its recorded 7 albums, BigJay heard it earlier on a christmas record I did. Performed in nearly as many countries as I have. Been thrown at people, across stages, left in a carpark in Edinburgh. Used as collateral for bar bills (not by me). Rescued from people trying to make off with it.

Who says you have to buy a pro level instrument for working hard. If that guitar body could talk you'd have a hard time shutting it up anytime soon.

Circa 2001. Blame the photographer.

Seems like Niki has been through alot with this guitar. Somehow I may have missed this, but how did the body get burned?

Some folks were talking of scorching a guitar body, trying to give a hendrix kind of look (when will people learn copying isnt cool  ). I was bored so showed em the folly of that path.

Now I see. Its amazing how much of a learning experience this has become for so many people. The resurrection process is awesome.

Nick, I find that a very moving post, and I admire you for your frankness. Thank you.

I'm also even more suprised you want to give this body away...

Orville, I'm not saying you're right and I'm not saying you're wrong. I'm not even saying your partly right, partly wrong.

I'm just saying: you're smarter than the average bear.

More later, peeps.

As I said the worker deserves his wages. I abused the thing at the end of its time with me. Its far more fitting that it goes to someone who is better able to care for it.

Niki and Ceri,

You guys are amazing in your generosity and friendship toward eachother. You're are both the highest examples of what this forum can be.

How about a laminated top? You could even put a natural finish on it and no one, except forumites, would ever know how bad the body really was.

what would be cool would be instead of a solid color, painting each piece a differnt color. kinda crashocastorish, except following the actual repairs as a guide. prolly a dum idear.

dunno just brainstorming, thinking outloud throught the querty board.

Hi Randy: well, that applies to Niki - turns out I'm just building a guitar for myself, which is not very generous at all. And I tell you what, I happen to know there's more to Nick's giving nature even than meets the eye...

BTW: I need to mention here that another Forum user who has not even posted on this thread yet has made an amazingly generous offer of a set of pickups to go in this guitar. Isn't that outstanding?

He made that offer off the Forum so I won't name him here if he doesn't want - but he knows who he is! Most of us here know him well as one of the true gentlemen of the Forum.

There's a lot of generous spirit running round this place!!!

As it happens, I already have the pickup aspect covered (as will become clear), but I just love the idea of a real joint Forum project. We should knock that around some more...

***

And to those kicking around ideas - that's the whole fun of the thing! Carry on...

Next episode in a minute.

Cheers - C

Righto: next update.

This is going to be a bit dull, I'm afraid: a case of watching glue dry. But then this type of job is sometimes like that...

Here was the body with that new center block clamped in place overnight for the glue to dry:
Image

Next day, here it is with the cramps removed:
Image

And the back, showing how the wood will need to be shaped and the trem cavity opened up:
Image

Next, you'll recall that as the paint came off this body (page four) we discovered that some of the join lines in the multipiece body were starting to delaminate in various spots. Untill that center block was in place I wasn't confident about doing the clamping necessary to close those cracks up: the middle of the guitar was too weak.

Now we're ready to attend to those little jobs. I slightly watered down some wood glue so that it would wick into the cracks more easily and then slathered it on, directing it down into the wood with the blade of a scalpel:
Image

No professional joiner would take these lightweight sash cramps too seriously, but for guitar work they are ideal. I cut some cauls to cope with the curve of the body and lined them with cork, but still they tended to slide out from beneath the head of that cramp. So the G-cramps are there to hold the sash cramps in place. This may not be the last time on this project that effective clamping is a major part of the effort...:
Image

The same thing up on the treble horn. Also a custom shaped clamping caul with cork on the edge, but a much easier part to clamp:
Image

And many hours later here is the lower bout with the cramps removed and the surplus glue sanded off:
Image

Seems to have worked - phew!

More tomorrow.

Cheers - C
