The Korean factory building those guitars probably went to excessive lengths to ensure they kept the contract to build the guitars. Little perfections like plugging the fret ends being one.

Would you believe I missed out on a Lite ash Strat for £150 a month ago. I didnt even go and look at it, thinking I've too many guitars anyway.

Hi Ceri,

i was looking at some wallpapers, and it seems like the Roadworn 60's strat also has individually rounded edges on the neck.

caution, the picture is really big.

Nah I use 3 but only really need 2, theres 12 of the things. 6 of them are out at the moment and it's still too many around the house.

I played better and enjoyed playing more when I had them all bar one. I think a big sell may take place this summer. Seven guitar, 3 amps and a multitude of pedals have got to go.

Ceri,
Absolutely fantastic job! When my job brings me down, as it has in the past few months, this build has kept my attitude in check and helps me come to work, in the hopes that there is more progress on your guitar and neck. Many thanks for keeping the duldrums of a non-loved job down. Incidentally, I was looking at my '08 American Std. last night, and the tangs seem to go to the edge. Very smooth though, and Fender did a good job on my instrument. Thanks again!

I have to come to nikininja's defense. He is neither an ox nor a moron. You can't talk about my friends like that. 8)

Ha - interesting. Thank you for that, pickguarder.

I believe I heard Fender had extended the rolled edges from the US line over to Mexican-made guitars as well. Is that right, does anyone know?

I guess if they belong anywhere it is on a guitar that calls itself "roadworn". It is the effect of years of wear the rounding was originally meant to imitate, after all.

Regarding lacquer on Fender frets: I've sometimes heard people complaining about lacquer on the top of frets, but I've never seen that myself.

Dan Erlewine tells us when finishing and fretting a neck to scrape the lacquer off the tops with a little home-made tool for the purpose. I don't know whether Fender do that or whether the lacquer just gets removed during levelling. But I'm scratching my head to understand the idea of crowning and dressing the frets and then spraying lacquer on them afterwards. Why would they do that?

Anyway, I've never seen frets with lacquer on the playing surface - but I always stand to be corrected.

Sorry, no guitar making today. Been out all day and too much red wine at lunch tells me not to go near my project with sharp tools in hand...

Tomorrow... - C

...PS: Ooo look, a couple of double-oh-sevens to be found hiding in full view. Is that significant? ... ... ... No.

Ceri; with all the fine work you have been doing and then shooting photos with one hand, it occurs to me that it may be time to get yourself a tri-pod. Being the selfish leech I am and wanting to see how it's done with "both hands", I think that it may give you a little relief as you document this whole process.

Just use that delayed timer to shoot the photo and wella, look Ma, Both hands ! :o

Awesome work. I'm thankful I've been following since page one. I feel sorry for those who are spending a few hours of "can't put the book down" reading to catch up. 100 pages before we know it.

Redeem yourself out of selfish leechdom by sending the man the equipment.

I would in a minute if it weren't for the fact that shipping it from across the pond along with duties and taxes would be three times more than the thing would cost to buy. Yet it is a small price to pay for what we are learning here.

Agreed. Carry on, then.

Hey Mr C., love the detail you show and the community in this thread. Regarding the above statement, yeppers, I have a few 88-93 Strats that are new old stock and they have finish on top the frets. Very light, but you can especially see it down around the 12th fret and beyond, where the finish is yellowing. On one of my guitars you see the finish flaking off on parts of the fret. More common on the edges (sometimes fairly thick) but some times on the top too. I do not know if it was one of those things were production was done just a little too fast, or what. but one thing I always know, when I see finish on the frets I know the guitar has not been played hardly at all! ( I will try to take some close up snaps).

Keep up the good work and we continue to ogle your picts and read your commentary!

Woah man!! Ceri, I've spent the last two days going through this thread, from page one , to here.
It has been an extraordinary journey and a lesson in craft, technique, skill, nous and patience.
In short; Mind blowing.
I think you have done a fantastic job and I wish I had caught this project from the start and taken the ride along with all the other guys in 'real time' as it were.
I'll be there next time, if you do any more projects.
You've amazed me man, you are the dude.
Wow!! Cool job. 8)
