Wow Mr. C. I am back from the jungles. No exotic woods with me even though I did see some I wish I could have brought home such as Narra (Pterocarpus Indicus); Philippines Mahogany (Shorea Negrosensis); Teak (Tectona Grandis) and a host of other nice flavors! Also, now I am back in my own bed after being up 33 hrs.

You do have me intrigued with your work.... espionage linked with access to high level security machines all over Europe and other places? Ummm.... all for the hidden agenda of machining a neck..... Good work mate!!!! I read tonight with with a BIG smile on my face...3 whole pages to catch up on! Thanks!!!

Possibly the greatest internet piece I've ever seen.

Them blokes at carlsberg would be hard pressed to beat it anyway.

Kong that is too funny    I almost cut it off because you have to wait so long for the intro but it was worth the wait. However I do believe you may have blown Ceri's cover... 8)

Ceri thanks again for this thread and all the work you put into it. It seems you've become a worldwide sensation.

Ceri, I do still keep an eye on this thread when I stop by the forum. The guitar is looking killer man. I'm digging the neck part of this thread as well.

The planer experiment was decent enough. I would have to say however that the planer did you a favor in this case. On that particular plank the cutter was going against the grain. That's the reason for the knarliness (is that a word?).

The more the cutter-head becomes exposed, the more you're treading with danger. That's why they only adjust so far. Better to keep all digits, especially for a guitar player. When you're going against the grain, there's more of a chance for tear-out and/or a kick-back. Just always be aware of that side grain when you're using the planer. I know it gets hard to plan ahead for every bit of how you're going to accomplish each step. The other side of the board would have been better to run in this case, however, you would have still run into the depth problem.

Image

There are some cases where the grain is all over the place, and it becomes hard to decide which way to run the board. You just have to try to decide which one has a better chance of running through with less tear-out. One trick I used to do in the shop was to take a hard-wood board that was iffy, where I knew it was going to have tear-out one way or the other, and get a wet rag and dampen the surface of the board with water before running it. It softens the grain enough to not chip out so bad. But be aware that if you do that, there's going to be more resistance from the cutter-head and planer surface, so a good waxing or siliconing of the surface is a good idea before starting.

I just wanted to chime in on that real quick mainly because I just wanted to make sure you understood why you might experience the knarly result, and to make sure you understand that a Planer is one of the most dangerous woodworking tools you can work with. When I taught woodworkers in the shop, I always made sure they understood how to read the grain on Planers and Shapers (what I consider to be the 2 most dangerous tools in a shop). Even if they told me they knew. I don't like it on my conscience to NOT say anything, then hear about an unfortunate incident later.

So far by what I can tell, you're a very careful person Ceri. As odd as it may sound, this post is just as much for me as it is for anyone else.
