Hi everybody,

I've got a Fender Highway 1, and when i use the tremolo my third string goes out of tune (only third string). If i tune the string after using the tremolo works fine, but  then i can´t bend the string because goes out of tune.

I hope you understand my problem (i can use only bend or only Tremolo)

Please help me!!

pd: excuse my english, i'm from Chile.

You need to make sure the string is wound onto the tuner properly.

The string needs to only go round the tuner 2 times. Also when you put strings on it is worth giving them a sharp pull up, away from the pickups. Doing this helps get rid of any slack in the tuner post windings.

Your English is fine.

Welcome!

Your's is a common problem where the nut is not always the culprit. Sparing you all the details, this is just one of those quirks when using the Vintage type Tremolo.

After you've pushed down on your tremolo, as it starts coming back up, bend your G string a whole step, fingering at the 12th fret. As your tremolo comes back to its regular resting position, release your bend on the G string. This should solve your problem, believe it or not.

With these Vintage Tremolo systems, today's players expect more out of them then what they were originally designed for or can ever offer. So, quirks arise and like my above remedy, even quirkier solutions are found. If you think about it, my remedy seems somewhat ridiculous on face value but it works every time.

and a touch of lip salve or vaseline on the underside of your string trees..

Remember, with Vintage tremolo systems friction is your enemy!

A further word:

If you choose to start lubricating everything whether it is necessary or not, DO NOT use any lubricant which contains petroleum. Petroleum (oil) can and will seep into the wood of the guitar causing permanent damage, especially at glue joints. Petroleum is also a collector for dust, grit and gunk. Graphite is your best choice if you feel it is necessary to lubricate.

Sounds like youre not a big fan of lubricating various guitar stuff, Martian. Why?

I find it is appropriate only WHEN and AS necessary. ALL nuts, bridge saddles, etc, do not need to be slathered with lubricant if they are functioning correctly. Even OEM, all guitars don't come plastered with lubricant anywhere and everywhere and if they did, in my world, that would start sending up flags.

Does the guitar "ping" after a deep tremolo dive?

You might just drop a little graphite into that nut slot, just in case.

Agreed. My Gibson explorer had a similar problem when I would bend the strings. I put in Sperzel locking tuners. That made a big difference. This could be a rather pricey fix though if you decide to have the nut replaced. Would be well worth it though in the long run. I have a strat with the LSR rolling nut and never have problems. I still need to replace the one on my Gibson though as the new tuners helped for the most part but not completely.

:D I too am from Chile. Born in Santiago.
