a lot of wrong information here..., (please correct me if you think i'm wrong)....,

the highway 1 series was introduced during a world wide economic downturn, with falling sales, and not wanting to devalue their range, and needing to survive, they introduced what they called a budget american made fender electric guitar. (The Highway 1)

but it really wasn't a budget guitar (better to say it's a budget guitar then to send out nervous energy that all of their guitars have dropped in value, which would further decrease their profits and their market position)

but as time went on and these guitars morphed and evolved (into half-breed vintage reissues without the price tag) players really responded to them, and praised their sound and vintage apperance....., but why wouldn't they, these guitars were basically Vintage reissues with out the polishing, lacquering and the price tag

now let's talk about the paints they used ...., it is so wrong for people to say the paint on these guitars were designed to wear away... NOT TRUE (although that does seem to happen on some of them after a period of playing..., but they are not wearing away, they are actually getting polished by the sleeves on your arm.... (hence the shinny apperance...., and what i said before 'they are unpolished and unlacqured)

but not all of them are unpolished unlacquared i have a Highway HSS 2009 and it has a very tough high gloss poly finish..., (as i said before as these guitars progressed fender started pouring more money into them, and eventually abandonded them because their once budget range had morphed into a more expensive vintage reissue, and when the world wide economy improved fender stopped making their "to expensive to continue highway range)

i am a high-end player and i own a lot of high-end gear, but i'm not an expert on everything Fender, although i own many modern and vintage american standards and amongst them i have a 2009 HSS Highway stratocaster with poly gloss finish and a 2006 Highway 1 Telecaster with thin unpolished unlacquared finish...,

i love them both and would never sell them..., speaking of which i don't know why many ebay sellers try to hide the fact that they are selling a highway guitar (trying to pretend it's an american standard) ...., anyone who knows, knows these guitar in many cases fell and play better then many american standards, i know mine do.

now about those paints again (i may be wrong on this but) my research tends to suggest when fender introduced The highway 1 series they had the thinner unpolished unlacqured paints but towards the end years of production (production ending about 2009 ?) they dropped the "1" from the name, and started calling them The Highway series, and it was these later guitars that had the full polished finishes.

but i do love the unpolished unlacquared finished, but try not to think of the pain as wearing away, your own eyes show yu that it's not wearing when you play it, it's actually being polished..., so if you want to protect it from scuffs and minor scratches.., just polish the complete guitar as many other people here have suggested, and it will give it shinny non-dull slightly protective finish.

Really? I would've thought it was obvious! :)
Cheers - Peter.

The differences between the two are minor and make up for the original cost difference. AmSTD includes HSC, H1/AmSpec a soft bag, AmSpec has no strap or ashtray with the case candy, 2-post vs 6-screw tremolo, and standard vs bi-flex truss rod. The truss rod is the biggest deal from a parts and tech standpoint, but from an owner's standpoint... meh. I've never encountered a neck with back bow due to anything other than an overtightened rod (and yes, I know it does happen)... if the neck does not have a back bow at the time of sale and it's not strung up with 12's, the bi-flex is really not a big deal.

They are both US made, and there is no difference in quality or materials. On the used market, particularly if the H1/AmSpec includes a case, there is really no justification for a price difference.
