Hi all (not sure if this is the correct area to post this but anyway, here goes),

Just wondering if anyone could help me out with this one?

I sometimes play the guitar using a pick and other times with just my fingers (you just can't beat the tone of playing with your fingers imo) although when using the pick, I'll tend to use a sort of hybrid style of combining pick and one or two fingers.

My question is about 'pinch harmonics'. I just love em and this is one of the reasons that I stick with using a pick along with using my fingers.

What I wanted to ask is, is it possible to play a pich harmonic using your fingers?

I've searched the net but can't seem to find anything on the subject and also tried various techniques myself, trying to stumble on a method of creating them 'fingerstyle' but as yet, I have had little success.

So, I put it to you, is it possible?

Thanks guys,

Russ :?

Hi TS: I always pick with my fingers. I have tried for years to get good at pinched harmonics and have never learnt to do it reliably.

Not so long ago on a thread in the Lounge various Forum members offered me tips on how to pinch harmonics with the fingers: I tried and tried and still can't pull 'em out on demand. Sometimes they come, sometimes they don't. Hot damn...!

So. Apparently some folks can do it - but I ain't the one to say how. I'll be watching this thread for any further suggestions that suddenly make it all possible for me!

Cheers - C

Here you go TS a lesson from the master of pinch harmonics. Its all good the pinch harmonics begins at 5:30ish. I dont advise skipping to it though.

That's a great technique thanks Niki, I can see how that could work!

I'll give that some practice and see if I can make it happen.

There's always someone that's figured a way to do something, seem so simple, I can't believe I've not stumbled across that one yet!

Cheers

Russ

It is possible, I do it but it is alot harder than with a pick. I really dont count on the squeels like I do with a pick.

You can get into pinch harmonics fairly reliably, by using your first finger and thumb together on the string. Try and pick with both at the same time. It's easier if you have some nail growth visible over the tip of your finger and thumb - not too much, just enough to get under the string.

Your thumb should be striking the string sideways whilst your finger is striking from the underside of the string. This sounds more complicated than it is actually, so give it a try. Hopefully, after a few minutes or so you'll start to get the hang of it.

i have trouble with getting pinch harmonics with fingers also.
hey all in all,
you acquired a technique of using combinations pick fingerstyle, and imo
that produces great tonality variances that you hear off of pros.

im trying to master using fingers and picks simutaneously and alternatively.
good luck

right on 01GT eibach.
that's jeff beck. as far as I know, he does not use picks but he's got a he** of a pinch. I don't know how he's doing it but I guess if we watch him play a lot, then maybe we can figure out how he's doing it

I have never even thought of this, but one way I can see doing it would be having the nail on your index finger grow out a bit and pick the string up with your nail while slightly touching the string with your thumb. Beck =we are not worthy.lol What cant Jeff do. Watch when he tremelo strums with his finger tips, we would all have blood running down our arms. The tips of his fingers must be like stone by now.
