300 bucks isnt gonna buy you much. You might look at the either the fender vibrochamp xd or the superchamp xd.Both are tube hybrid amps with some effects in them.

Keep in mind those MG series Marshalls are solid state amps. 100 watts of solid state is not nearly as loud as 100 watts from a tube Marshall.

I have an AVT 50 which is a Valvestate. I like it very well, but it is a hybrid and only has 1 tube which is in the preamp. The dirty channel is loud, but the clean channel is much quieter. The only way to get really loud on the clean channel is to crank up the gain. Given the choice I would buy an all tube Marshall. The AVT 50 is sort of in between the MG series and the all tube Marshalls. The all tube Marshalls will still have more volume.

Hi again phily: I think I can help on this one.

In addition to the TSL122 (bottom in the pic) I also have a Valvestate 100 (top) - as well as 10 and 100 watt MGs.

I went shopping for the MGs and AVTs because frankly the Triple Super Lead is just too savage for home use. What you gotta understand about valve/tube amps is that you usually have to turn them well up to achieve the desired tone.

As has been rightly observed by others, a 100 watt valve amp in your living room is pretty uncomfortable on the ears - and the neighbors will have you arrested. Less of an issue with a "master volume" Marshall (one that has seperate gain and volume controls) but still a problem.

Without the slightest disrespect I have a notion you are not about to play big stages just yet: so you need an amp that can cope with a band but also can sound OK at low volume levels at home. The latter is why small valve amps are now so popular and Marshall's new Class 5 is their answer to that requirement.

That kind of amp probably ain't going to cut through a band's mix though, which is why I'd suggest a Valvestate or similar from another maker might be a very appropriate solution for you. Even a solid-state or hybrid amp sounds better cranked, but they are useable turned down too.

I can confirm what Randy says: the Valvestate 100 turned way up is equivilant to the TSL just ticking over. And for your needs that's a good thing. Surprisingly, I find the clean channel on the Valvestate the least disappointing. The crunch and lead channels are absolutely fine on their own - it is only when you A/B them against a real valve amp that you realise what the latter gives.

Which is why that TSL costs four times the price of the AVT.

I strongly recommend an AVT for where you are right now - or the equivilant from VOX, Fender, Line 6 or whoever. You can get into the monstrous type amps later IF necessary.

Buy the right amp for the job. My gigging days are almost certainly behind me. If I was shopping today I wouldn't buy that TSL because it is stupidly too much for my realworld needs.

...I love it to the skies though!!! :D

Cheers - C

I recently bought one of these second hand, but as new from a guy that had too. I paid £575, they go for £700 in the uk.

I dont play Pumpkins, I like some of there stuff. I wanted a high quality USA made strat with high output pickups. I play mostly clean stuff with lots of delays and other ambient effects.

The finish wasnt an issue for me really, I've heard nitro lets the guitar sustain a bit better, and this with the hardtail is certainly true. It has bags of unamplified sustain. With a bit of dirt this thing screams too, for fun :)

It comes with a high end case which I really like too. I dont like floating bridges so the hardtail is excellent. The neck is sooo nice too, if thats your bag (9.25'' with Jumbo frets). Personal preferance but i really like the 70s headstock and decals.

Heres some pics
