Price tag would be a dead giveaway unless its the rare daphne blue that someone claimed went for 3k(but he was delusional).Seriously , the obvious is the flat finish and the 70s style headstock. As far as serial numbers, go to the Fender.com and go to "product dating".

Thinner nitrocellulose finish on HWY1. I believe the HWY1 has 2 string trees and one for the MIAs. "Made in U.S.A" is printed on front of headstock on the MIA but not on HWY1. HWY1 One has super-size or "Jumbo" frets.

The Hwy 1's finishes aren't near as shiny as the Am Std

Anyone know if the "natural wood" look was ever offered on a Highway One model?

Honey blonde would be as close to natural as the HWY1 comes.

Is the Hwy One in question made before 2006 or after? The ones from 2006 or before are much more difficult to distinguish from American Standards. The "pre-upgraded" Hwy One's have the small headstock, medium jumbo frets, and basically look identical to the American Standard except for the finish. The older Hwy One's have different pickups, greasebucket electronics, and I think different bridge and tuners (not really sure about the bridge and tuners). I have a 2006 Hwy One with a maple neck and it has the same neck as an American Standard. I can't see any difference at all.
