If so, can anyone recommend a good one: there are loads to chose from, Boss alone make loads? Is their SD-1 any good?

I tried it, it was all right, more of a distortion pedal than a true OD pedal. I like their Blues Driver (BD-2), though it gets mixed reviews. Works great for me, though.

Lately I have been using just my Telecaster and Amp with no effects, no stomp boxes no nothing, just simple Tele twang.

I use a Digitech RP-90 when I do use effects/overdrive but find myself using it less and less as I concentrate more and more on how my playing sounds without it.

Me too!!!! each day I enjoy more the clean sound of my strat and even my jackson!

In my xperience, to make a strat sound deadly, I use a boss metal zone and previously usea boss mega distortion pedal, that, with a little bit of delay, and there you go!! rip some heads off!!.lol

I use a TS808 with my 59 Bassman RI (1990 Model) is fantastic. I use to use a Fulltone OCD that was nice. My favorite is the Fulltone 69 which they dont make anymore but you can still find them around.

I use a Robert Keeley modded SD-1 with my VG and my hardtail through a Mesa amp. You can leave the mesa on the clean channel and this thing jumps it up - less midrange than a tube screamer, but I like that sound - hence the mesa. Can't beat the price either - $40 for the pedal and $80 for them to mod it, or $135 to just buy one from them.

Adey your really missing out mate. Get onto Burford in Redditch. I'll bring that mosquito with me when I head out your way.

Whats the band called and when are you playing round there?

My OD of choice is an old Yellow DOD Overdrive Plus that I've had since the early 80's. It still works great and does the job.

I have the Boss SD-1 and it collects dust-too much signal loss. I don't have much experience with other "pure" OD pedals. When I want to push my amp into overdrive, I hit my Keeley compressor. It can be set up to give a clean boost, or if your amp is on the right on the edge, it will push it over into overdrive territory. To me, it gives a more natural sound that is not overly harsh.

For live I used mainly amp to go over the edge or sometimes BOSS OD-2.
At home I used OD-2 but stated to hate it. Found out about the EQ curve that built or voiced into the amps (I don't know how). But OD-2 does not work well (to my ear) with superChamp XD, deluxe, twin. TS-9 with upped mids sounds a lot better.
