i changed the strings on my new strat yesterday, but i have never owned a guitar with a tremelo. When i tuned the guitar the back of the bridge was much higher in the air than before. I didn't think i changed string gauges but i must have. anyway I'm using 3 springs right now, should i put another in? what would be the best thing to do?

You can put a 4th spring in or tighten the two screws of the tremolo claw a full revolution each. Either way, loosen the strings first and then retune them once you've completed your chosen task.
