If it comes to Blues then I would say BB King hands down

I would choose him as the most influential, too. Most guitarists have elements of his style and don't even know it came from B.B.

I like the idea of this standard for measuring the best. It is still subjective, but a good baseline for measuring talent (even if it is just in the imagination). The guy who can play anybody else's stuff, and no one can play his is the best. For my money and ears, Danny Gatton would be in this class (as would many others).

There are a lot of great Country players that really don't get the recognition that they deserve. Along with Danny...guy's like Brent Mason, who plays for almost everyone, Charlie Crow, from Brooks & Dunn, Albert Lee, Johnny Hiland, and a host of others, are a pleasure to listen to.

Although these guys are master players....I don't think any of them actually get around the instrument like Vai. Back in the day, I would have said this about SRV as well. Lots of great blues players, but no one got around the instrument like Stevie Ray did.

If you get the chance to watch these guy's play, and not just listen...you will find yourself repeatedly asking...what the hell did he just do?, how the hell did he just do that?, and "my goodness" is always on the tip of my tongue as well.

Thanks
Noodles

I think Gatton has great speed, but it is his right hand work that I find more amazing as well as how cleanly each note rings. He pretty much picks each note, not as many hammers and pulls as the shredders. Not taking anything away from Vai though...he's truly an amazing talent. Like someone else said, it's still pretty much all subjective.

It would be a big list for me. Rory Gallagher Is way up there. He is said to have had the very first power trio.

Actually, I think that's Buddy Guy, who in turn influenced people like Cream, Gallagher etc...

Actually if you are speaking of a rock trio, Rory Gallagher probably had the first power trio, a little before Cream was formed. Buddy Guy usually
had a harmonica player, Junior Wells with him along with a bass player and drummer. It really doesn't matter too much, one way or the other -
I like all of them

I don't know why everybody here makes this topic soooooo difficult. The answer is easy. The best guitarists (and your absolute favorites, even though you won't admit it) are.......wait for it........the JONAS BROTHERS! There, I said it. Debate over, thread closed.

1st on my list of favorites is Jimi Hendrix.
2nd is SRV
3rd is Billie F. Gibbons
I've got many favorites; right now these are my top three.

Not sure who's "best". I can't answer that.
