Randy Rhoads
Jake E. Lee
Zakk Wylde

There are those who went before, in Black Sabbath, and there are those who know better than I do.

Spill the goods; what was that concert like?

Long time ago. It was at Severance Hall in Cleveland. He was a wonderful guitar player. But the most memorable thing about that night was that I backed the station wagon into a telephone pole and we had to get the tailgate replaced. :(

This "best guitar player" discussion I always find entertaining. Who is your favorite guitar player...is certainly much more realistic, and completely subjective. 100% opinion, and I love some of the crazy players names that get thrown around.

My playin buddies and I have a theory about deciding who the "Best" guitar player really is. The first thing that I would like you all to do, and this is the hard part, is to forget whether or not you "like" the music, and judge only the ability of the player to operate the instrument.

Next you pick any players that you want to be part of the challenge, and select a piece of music to be played. Each player performs the same piece, and now the "better" player can be determined.

My choices for "Best Guitar Player Alive" would look something like this.....

Steve Vai...Joe Satriani...Eric Johnson...John Petrucci...Yngwie Malmsteen...

These guy's are "Absolute Masters" of the instrument. Any one of them can easily play anything put in front of them done by any artist that you may choose....but the piece of choice done by these guy's will no way be able to be played by "your choice" artist. Thus determining "Best Ability" at playing the guitar.

Any comments?

Thanks
Noodles

Technically there is a greatest guitar player somewhere on earth. He/she could be some poor bum for all we know.

My favourite? Pick a Jimmy. There is no wrong Jimmy.

By no means the greatest guitar player but the man that inspired me to pick up the guitar is Jerry Garcia. He is and will forever be my favorite guitarist. Bobby Weir is also an amazing and unique rythym guitarist. However, the current list of guitarists I'm learning from is more of the Gallagher, Clapton, SRV type of guys.

I like the idea of this standard for measuring the best. It is still subjective, but a good baseline for measuring talent (even if it is just in the imagination). The guy who can play anybody else's stuff, and no one can play his is the best. For my money and ears, Danny Gatton would be in this class (as would many others).

There are a lot of great Country players that really don't get the recognition that they deserve. Along with Danny...guy's like Brent Mason, who plays for almost everyone, Charlie Crow, from Brooks & Dunn, Albert Lee, Johnny Hiland, and a host of others, are a pleasure to listen to.

Although these guys are master players....I don't think any of them actually get around the instrument like Vai. Back in the day, I would have said this about SRV as well. Lots of great blues players, but no one got around the instrument like Stevie Ray did.

If you get the chance to watch these guy's play, and not just listen...you will find yourself repeatedly asking...what the hell did he just do?, how the hell did he just do that?, and "my goodness" is always on the tip of my tongue as well.

Thanks
Noodles
