So, I was nosing around a pawn shop and found a Fneder neck. It has a large CBS style headstock, rosewood fretboard, and "Stratocaster" is the large scrolled kind. It doesnt have a serial number, only a Patent number.

Ive been looking at Warmoth necks for a while now, especially the large headstock and they are about 200 and the one in the pawn shop was 150 fyi.

What do yall make of this?

Take a good look at the heel. Also have a nose around the websites at 70's strats. Know their logo scripts like your own handwriting. If it satisfies your suspicions, congratulations. You bought a 70's neck for a good price.

I'd be very suspicious of it at that price. That said, even if its in bad condition. It could be a good do up job. Maybe the basis for a 70's style strat build.

This is what I was thinking because of the price, but isnt that a little steep for a highway1 neck?

Maybe it's a 70's RI?

I have to absolutely 100% agree with Ninja here...know -exactly- what those headstock logos should look like and know what to look for on the heel as far as stamps go. I'm going to go a couple of steps further however because even these things can be easily faked...if you have any guitar shops in your area that deal with vintage instruments, go look at a couple of genuine 70's Strats and get a feel for how they should actually look. Look closely at the logo...not only the "style" but at the edges too...does it appear as though it's been replaced? Also look at the tuners as well...are they the correct vintage? If there are no tuners, what about the screw holes...with a genuine 70's neck, there should be screw holes for tuners on that headstock compared with more "contemporary" models which have the set pins. What about the neck tint? How about fret wear? LOOK AT THE DETAILS -VERY- CLOSELY.

Remember, in this day and age it is -NOT- hard to fake a Strat logo...not hard at all. Case in point;

Image

This one is -NOT- a genuine Fender...in fact this neck is from an '04 Indonesian Squire Standard. How do I know? -I- made it...took me all of about 20 minutes...and this wasn't even my best work! LOL!

Seriously dude, do your research ahead of time, look at the details of that neck and know -what- to look for!

Good Luck,
Jim

(BTW...just for the record, the neck in the image above was done -strictly- for my own pleasure...it's not intended to fool anyone and this instrument will never be sold. Further, I have left the original Squier serial number and the "Crafted in Indonesia" in tact on the back of the headstock. I simply did the logo to match the aesthetic of that specific project instrument.)
