He's inoffensive compared to most of the garbage on the radio, and can certainly play and sing well. I don't dislike him at all, but I do think he's overrated.

I say let him do his thing. He may be overrated to some but no one can deny he has talent. He also knows how to use the media to his advantage. He is living the life and is having fun doing it. Am I jealous? Yeah probably, but I can't fault him for that. I may not be his biggest fan but I don't have a problem with him for being famous. I don't have to listen to him if I don't want to and for all those who think he is great then I respect your opinion.

John Mayer has to be the most polarizing man on the planet right now. I would call myself a fan so take this for what it's worth but I think most people who don't like his music don't like him on a personal level and will never admit that he's a talented musician.

I actually like him on a personal level. Of course, I would never have the chance to know him on a personal level, so I mean on a celebrity level. I think it's cool that he can hang with Buddy, Eric, Jessica, and Jennifer (just to name a few) and have loads of tattoos and money.

I am not impressed by his guitar playing talent. I am not impressed by the songs of his I hear on the radio. So I won't be calling him a talented musician and I'm not like the most people you have in mind.

When Pino Palladino who is won of the most professionally respected session bassists in the history of the instrument gives you (in this case JM) props, you don't have like the art he has created, but are would hard to deny his talent.

Mayer, Jordon, & Palladino, Continuum = a grammy

If he were paying me big bucks to play with him, I'd say nice things about him too.

1996 Jagged Little Pill performed by Alanis Morissette, yes grammies only ever go to masterpieces!
I am not saying anything about his album, but using a grammy as an argument for quality is pointless.

Alot of people in the forum do talk about John Mayer alot. They also talk about Eric Clapton and David Gilmour alot also. What a testament to these great players. I like them all, but hope everyone remembers to do their own thing and try not to be clones.

Do you haters hang out in new guitar threads and tell the posters how much you don't like the color the sound or the fact the guitar is not original?

lol... in my case, i knew he had talent when i was learning to play with my acoustic guitar and i pulled some tabs for his pop stuff, and thought to myself, WTF kind of chord is that. thats not your typicall GCD chords.
then i saw him in the crossroads dvd, i was blown away truth be told.
then i got where the light is. and i really, truly enjoyed it. i was even trying different pedals to get his tone, but i do that with everyone anyway
like eric clapton, robin trower, jimmi hendrix, joe bonamassa. but you know whos tone is the hardest for me right now? bb king (dont have a 335)
at 1st i didnt like jimmie hendrix music, i thought it was sloppy  .
i dont guitar players for granted. i try to listen to their phrasing, melodies.
john mayer has talent, and great phrasing in his blues music.
listen to "come when i call", "out of my mind", and "everyday i have the blues" , " who did you think i was". great stuff. especially from where the light is.
