I believe that's what the term is intended to imply - thus if someone calls you a "hater" than they are saying that you are saying nasty $hit out of jealousy.

Again, I don't use the term. I'm an 80's metalhead physicist from NH.

i had a weird dream last night that i saw john mayer at a festival, and he was playing a very slow solo, and getting loads of fret buzz... weird.

The term "hater" has been hijacked by the youth of today and the hip hop culture and they use it to describe someone who doesn't agree with their own individual opinion or the opinion of their group.

"If you don't like Obama you a hater" - if you say anything bad about Obama

"Why you 'hatein' on John Mayer for? - if you don't agree that Mayer is a guitar god

I find the term has been changed to describe someone who is actually displaying hate in order to describe someone who disagrees with their point of view. [/i]

I only have respect for John Mayer because of his rep with the ladies and the fact he was on Chappelle's Show. As for his music, I won't say I hate it, but I am in no way crazy about it.

Booo...that's all. Never liked his music. Don't like Dave Mathews Band and JM is just a clone. Watered down college rock. Bleh!

I always thought he was a DMB rip off when he first hit the scene, but listen to his Where The Light Is / Live in LA disc. If acoustic is not your thing, go right to the Trio set and the full band set. It might change your opinion. He's a blues monster! The man can jam. But hey, to each his own...

Howlin' Wolf was a blues monster. John Mayer is just a blues gnome. Which probably makes me a Blues pidgeon or something like that >_>

JM can play, but he is no slowhand, SRV, or Mark Knopfler. JM is famous for his singing, which I must admit, in my opinion is second rate pub grade, unless filtered through very expensive software. When you consider that without the computer's ability to do this, none of us would know who JM is, it kinda puts it into perspective for me. I am not saying I am a better guitarist than he, but I don't have a sig model due to my abilities with protools.

I don't get this, He sounds exactly the same on CD as he does live :?: , so I highly doubt there is some kind of studio magic worked on his voice to a great extent. Also I think he is known for his rhythm work and songwriting. When you hear John playing rhythm I guarantee almost anybody here can pick it out as him

I must agree with you, he is gifted when it comes to writing music. I also agree that he is a solid player. Have a looksie on youtube for some live JM blues and you will get a taste of his unprocessed voice. Probably just tokers lungs, but hoarse nonetheless. He is no Vince Gill, or Garfunkel, so far as voice is concerned.
I think this horse is almost dead! :D

Guys, listen to his live performances with Steve Jordan and Pino Palladino (John Mayer Trio). He's not hiding behind anyone there and his guitar playing is steller. Also, Eric Clapton invites him to play with him live often - what does that tell you? Check out the Crossroads DVDs (Antigua benefit) concerts. John Mayer plays some wicked guitar. Like him or not, you cannopt deny - he has serious chops! Get over all that other nonsense about his early acoustic "sensitivity", his looks and his favor with the ladies.

Serious chops does not make one a blues monster. Playing with Eric Clapton does not make one a blues monster. I feel thus far in his career he has not separated him self distinctively from his predecessors, such as Clapton, to be proclaimed as a monster of the blues (Whatever monster of the blues means, idk it sounds cool). That being said, I have nothing against the guy, I somewhat like the Dave Matthews meets blues concept >_> I just enjoy making funny analogies (That one was mainly because Howlin Wolf was 6'3 300 lbs, John Mayer would be like a elf [I said gnome before, in retrospect elf is more suiting] in comparison).

Are JM songs soft and poppy? Of course they are. But it doesn't take away from his playing ability. He has chops, no doubt. And the fact that Clapton does play live with him, along with B.B.King should account for something. They are greats and by allowing the new kid on the block to play next to them is huge.

Say what you want, but if you think he lacks chops, watch the second half of his latest dvd
