I'm not sure about the S1 switch but I found it to be a very easy thing to do. I first, naturally, took off the strings and then unscrewed the pickguard from the body. I then took the volume/tone knobs off and took apart the nuts that hold the controls in place. Then I unscrewed the pickups and then just rescrewed everything onto the new pickguard so that it matched how the original pickguard was. I don't know if that made much sense but overall its a pretty easy process.

The S1-switch on my American Standard 2006 is incorporated in the volume-pot.
