John Mayer - No Longer Guitarist

Wow, this is harsh, as are some of the comments in this thread.

I haven't heard the new album -- it's not on my "to buy" list of CDs, so I am unlikely to ever hear it in its entirety.

Obviously, I'm not a fan, but I'm not a basher either. Color me neutral.

John Mayer is no longer a guitarist, plain and simple, he is a pop artist that makes the same old tired bubble-gum crap that is on your radio every day.

Do not buy it. You will be sorely dissapointed.

To me it's just sad that someone with the ability to play the guitar is completely and %100 wasting that talent. I know blues doesn't sell like pop and r&b, but it's sad to see sell out after sell out wasting god given talent to make the kind of garbage that is on this new cd.

horrible album, please dont anyone buy it, if you enjoy music...dont buy this.

I have never followed John Mayer ..I seen a video on you tube were he played Crossroads with Clapton that i thought was fantastic..But after watching that video and checking out his other music i could never understand the hype..
I wonder though home much of our opinions on his talent level are based on our dislike of his music style versus his actual talent level..

If anything I have had the laugh of the week with 63supro saying Mayers music is as deep as my foot bath.LMFAO I cant stop laughing . I actually have tears in my eyes that is a classic.

John Mayer point blank said he took the pop route so he could get to do what he loves and that is playing blues rock. Now he is making american idol music. Will the real John Mayer please stand up. For cryin out loud everyone mentions his version of Crossroads with Clapton or his Man in the Mirror at Jacksons wake or his version of Panama on youtube or him stealing Dave Mathews act. Outside of covers and copying what has he done so original.

SRV came on the scene when the blues were just about dead and ripped peoples faces off. Shredders stopped what they were doing and took notice of this meteor. My wife who hates the blues was cleaning the house the first time I put on Live at the El Mocombo and had to sit down and go this is the greatest player I ever heard.

I really wish Mayer would knock me on my $@! I am dying for someone to come along and be the next Clapton, Hendrix,Vanhalen SRV THE GUY WHO COMES ONCE A DECADE but it is not him. He is fine at what he does it is just that he does bot come close to making me scratch my head and go what the hll is he doing there. Just like that other guy Jack White. I could play like that at 15 give me a break. I hate to sound like a hater because I am not but a lot of people on here built him up for his big fall for making him out to be something he is not.GREAT.

SRV came around when MTV was in its heyday and hair metal bands and pop bands like duran duran were dominating the air waves.SRV got alot of air play on MTV and had some hit songs (including a number 1) playing music blues and some rock.Certainly not the popular music of the day.If you look at Texas Flood it was so far removed from so called pop music it wasnt even funny. Then you look at Eric Clapton.Has played everything from blues , rock, reggae, pop and country with a great deat of success.Time will tell about Mayer.SRV went against the grain of the pop scene and had success, Eric Clapton went against the grain of his diehard fans and had success.Whats going to be the determining factor is whether hes going to be true to himself or just do what the music industry wants him to do.If the latter , he will just get swallowed up by the machine.JMO.

I think it might be time to make a thread called "Young or unknown guitarists who are better than John Mayer" thread. That one would go platinum and hilarity would ensue. Betwen those who don't like Mayer and those who love him like a family member, we would have a great debate on our hands

I may be wrong, but I don't think many people over here know who the heck John Mayer is, or even care... okay, slight exaggeration, guitar people will know who he is, but do we care?

I guess my point is, internationally, he's no big deal. Personally, I think he's obviously a good technical player, but I find his music sickly and kind of lacking in substance. To put it crudely, the guy hasn't got the balls to be considered a 'great'.

I'm only being vitriolic 'cos the guy's sooooo up himself.

Mayer is a monster guitar player, and him putting out a CD you don't like doesn't change that.

Twenty years from now, he'll be what Clapton is now: a revered institution (and probably getting in touch with his bluesy roots once again).

I'm NOT being sexist al all! Just a realist. Teenage girls are attracted to John's music because indeed, they may actually like it; and because of his 'Abercrombie and Fitch" good looks !!
They are NOT interested in the technically complex blues turnaround he did in a particular song....they're looking into his puppy dog eyes!
I'm NOT faulting them....they're young....hormones raging.....and that equates to record sales to that particular demographic!
John Mayer can INDEED play. I LOVE his 'TRY' C.D.
I wish he'd do more of that!
The subject matter of the songs on that C.D. more than likely did NOT appeal to his core demographic.

Yeah, that was pretty funny. Unfortunately it was also pretty stupid, too. I am not a big fan of Mayer, but I can acknowledge his talent. The problem here is that people like to rip artists with "they suck" and "no depth" for no more reason other than that they don't like it. Yep, the Fender Forum seems pretty closed minded and full of John Lee Hooker wannabes who were never good enough in their own right. My point is ... just because you don't like it does not mean an artist is not talented and can't play. To listen to John Mayer's "Daughters" and then turnaround and say he has "no depth" exposes musical ignorance. Sorry, there is just no other way to say it ...

this has been a crazy thread. it is obvious that you either like the guy or you dont. I really beleive that Mayer does what he wants. I dont think for a second that he thinks to himself "oh i think i will write a pop album". He has a lot of outlets for his music. Forming the trio allows him to let his blues out and to do it live. the studio is his outlet for writing his music. i am a fan of Mayer and i can agree that i would have like to see him do a more guitar focused album but it still doesnt change the fact that he is very talented. the best part is that not everyone has to agree on that. there are plenty of musicians that i dont care to listen to i.e. van halen, but i would never say that he sucks or that he isnt talented.

I would like to add, that JM does have a pretty cool sense of rhythm when he plays finger style. Electric or acoustic, he adds some cool stuff. Not on the new record, but live, he holds his own.

He's no SRV or KWS...thats for sure.

Wishful thinking never hurt anyone, but 20 years from now let's hope there is no one around who remembers you saying this nonsense.

Not only is his playing uninspiring, whenever I hear him sing a note, I want to stick a screwdriver in my ear. Lucky for me I am able to change the station or channel quick enough to avoid such actions.
