Joe Bonamassa was a child prodigy. He played with BB King at what 11 years old? He's a great player who gives other young players a chance to learn about the blues by lecturing young people in schools.
Giving back and keeping the Blues alive is part of being a Blues artist too.

AMEN!!!

You can't even mention John Mayer in the same breath as Joe Bonamassa!
Mayer has indeed sold many more records than Joe......mostly to pre-teen girls and the like. THAT's why he has more fame and recognition than Joe!
As a guitarist, Mayer isn't qualified to change Joe's strings!
Joe recently sold out the Royal Albert Hall......ON HIS OWN!!
It's only a matter of time...........

I don't think anybody here is trying to compare Mayer to Bonamassa, but I think you are really devaluing Mayer's skill as a guitarist. He may not be the best, but he is damn good nonetheless. The Beatles sold many records to la ot of screaming teenage girls, but I don't think anyone devalues what they accomplished. Also what is this misconception that the only fans of Mayer are pre-teen girls? Yes they make up a big contingent, but there are plenty of older male fans, myself included. Also this idea hinges on the concept that teenage girls are incapable of liking good music, which is sexist as well. " It takes a manly man to know good music."

You'll never convince me to like him. I like what I like and I'm not a giant "fanboy" of anyone. But then again, I don't get my panties in a knot if someone insults someone I like.

I listen to all types of music, Jazz, Blues, Delta Blues, Swing, Roch, some Metal but not a whole lot, Some chicken pickers like Albert Lee, but neither Mayer nor Prince do it for me. The only crap I heard from either of them was from the radio. If I don't like what I hear, I won't waste my money trying to find something they do that I like. I'm not a fan of top 40 stuff. anyway. I like The Shaggs better than Mayer and Prince.

+1 although I probably dig Prince just slightly more than you. Nothing is going to convince me to like or that I like Mayer. And hell I posted a link to my favorite guitarist and band in the lounge and it got 0 replies, so it' doesn't bother me if no one liked that.

and you'll never convince me to fall in line with your opinion... I don't have my panties in a bunch either, just stating my opinion. It doesn't really hurt me much if you don't like Mayer, prince, or have never listened to rap other than the stuff on the radio, as you mentioned on the previous hip hop thread. Your dislike of Mayer does not hinder the enjoyment I'm getting from listening to "Assassin" right now as I type this. At the end of the day its all about enjoying the music. The truth is some will enjoy it, and some will hate it.

Wow, I must really bother you if you remember me from that thread. Just don't read the stuff I spout or respond to it. It's that's simple. You remember more of that than I do. LOL

Lets just say that JM's latest album sounds more like his pre-trio stuff, which had its own fan base. He's still got skills, but they're his, and he can do whatever he wants with them. If its music with more testosterone you want, go make some.

Seems pretty simple, no?

I think he is a great Blues player, but unfortunately you will never hear it on one of his albums because he has decided that pop music is where the money is. If you see him play live you might get a glimpse of his Blues talent.

No it doesn't bother me, I just recognize the same attitude you have towards Prince that you do towards hip-hop

Maybe he is sick and tired of copping it on these forums and has had enough. this maybe part of his grand plan to ditch the guitar and take up the flute at bandcamp

John Mayer - No Longer Guitarist

Wow, this is harsh, as are some of the comments in this thread.

I haven't heard the new album -- it's not on my "to buy" list of CDs, so I am unlikely to ever hear it in its entirety.

Obviously, I'm not a fan, but I'm not a basher either. Color me neutral.

John Mayer started as a blues guy. Many don't know this or don't care. But he breaks from his musical start just like any other musician out there. The other day, I read how the Rolling Stones named themselves after a Muddy Waters song because they loved his music so much. However, did the Stones play Chicago Blues and make it big? Or did they find their own style of music and run with it. How big would they have been if they were just the another Chicago blues band? My money is just another garage band. John Mayer may have started to be like Hendrix or SRV, but his found his own music. He has a voice and lyrical skills that many don't have. I'm not saying I'm a John Mayer fan, I just understand. I love the blues now and that's all I want to play. But when I started, it was all about AC/DC and Led Zepplin....
