Where is a good place to custom build your own guitar, someplace that's quality and well priced? Also what advantage does placing copper around your electronics in your guitar have? I've seen this done several times and was wondering if it's worth it?

I've been looking into the 3 Big Dipper pickups as well and I'm thinking about having those installed. Does anyone have any comments on these?

With all the parts available on Ebay you should be able to get virtually an entire guitar - and actual Fender parts to boot. I tend to be a little leary of "kits." Warmoth and Allparts also sell Fender licensed parts.

About the Big Dippers - while I haven't played them I know they're basically a scooped midrange singlecoil, so it won't have the "hot" midrange sound that so many go for. Of course, John Mayer doesn't like "hot" pickups anyways, so if you're into his tone it should be a good bet.

As for the foil shielding - that's to help reduce the electrical noise generated by the guitar's electronics...

I think that's the sound I would be looking for. Described as Cherpy or Low Mids with a bite. Are these pickups custom to that guitar though or can I by them exactly the way they are setup for that signature guitar?

I've been looking around on Warmoth and think that's where I'll start. They can put the whole guitar together which is better than recieving all the peices and hoping that my amatuer skills can put it together correctly.

So what's the equivlant to the Big Dipper pickups. It seems as though fender doesn't sell these pickups independent of the instrument. I was wondering if anyone knew about this?

The closest from Fender will probably be the '57/'62. You want a pickup with true vintage voicing - nothing "hot" or "boosted midrange." If you don't go with Fender and have to shop the other companys then check their websites - sometimes they show the Hi-Mid-Lo Eq of a pickup - go for something with a scooped midrange...

I own two parts guitars

1. A Strat w/ a Warmoth neck and body. everything else is Fender.

2. A Andy Summers Tele w/ an Allparts neck and body. Everything else is stuff I scrounged up from other companys. I love both of these guitars and they cost me no more than a $1K each. To have Fender do the same thing would cost me:

At least $3K for the Strat and $10K for the Tele.

By the way of all my Strats the Warmoth one is everyones faverate and I own a HWY1, a Clapton, a (2004) 50th Anniversay, and a '96 American Standerd.

Why not just buy a Fender Custom Shop guitar? By the time you get done piecing a partsocaster together you will have spent nearly as much money on a guitar you really know nothing about until the money is spent and it's assembled. Oh? shhhhhhhh, what's that I hear? It's the sound of "buyer's remorse" as you stand there looking at a collection of expensive parts that for some reason just don't get along with eachother. Ouch! huh? what was that? Oh, that's the sound of reality closing in when we realize that our beloved partsocaster is worth about 1/4 of what we paid for the parts alone.

Don't get me wrong. It's fun to build guitars from parts but the number of "keepers" vs the number of "klinkers" hardly makes it a worthwhile persuit. If money is not important and you can afford to go down the dark alley of rolling your own, it can be a lot of fun and an awesome learning experience!

I have played several hundred vintage guitars and for my money the Fender Custom Shop guitars smoke all of the originals I have ever played. Well, all but one. The new ones are just consistently better! (imo)
