I currently own a 1999 standard. I recently played the following three guitars: a Clapton, an American Strat, and an American Deluxe. Even though the specs say all four of these guitars have a 9.5 radius it seemed to me that:

1. The Clapton and the American Strat both have flatter wider necks then the standard or the deluxe.

2. My standard seems to have an even smaller neck width then any of the other three guitars.

Any answers?

What you may be experiencing is the fact that a Standard (Made in Mexico, yes?) is metric and has a narrower string spacing at the bridge. The neck width should not be that dramatically different between the guitars you mentioned. What will be different is the depth and shape of the neck and this may give the perception that the neck is wider. Now that I think of it the only guitar you mentioned with a wider bridge spacing is actually the Clapton (2 7/32")- the American and Deluxe have the stainless saddles and a narrower spacing (2 1/16"). My guess is you're feeling the differences in the neck shape - if you were to break out a ruler you'd see the width of the necks are all pretty close.

PS Just checked the specs - then nut width on the Clapton should be the same width as a Mexican standard - the two Americans are only 1/32" wider...
