Use it when needed for chord inversions, bass lines, string muting (E, A)

Thanks for the advice a big thanks to Texas guitar slinger for the practice sight i will use it..I must re track some of what i said i have used the thumb for bass line single notes ,,Im more talking about 6 position chord voicing's..The problem i'm having is the notes im using my thumb for come out sounding like a beginner playing a open F chord ..I'm sure with practice i will get the hang of it..There is some pluses about it as guitar has been getting a little to easy i haven't truly been challenged in awhile and this is taking concentration i haven't used in a long time so there is some positives to go along with the frustration..

I use it. Seems more for acoustic though.

I use my thumb on occasion only for certain chords. I find usually you can play the chord without it, but it sure adds nuance and fullness to the chord. I also use the pinkie on the lower strings from time to time to add fullness like on the non-barred C chord.

These things are difficult at first, but you get used to it, like playing some of the more uncommon jazz chords.

I haven't tried that yet. Not far enough along in my learning I suppose.

I had reached the point where I would very rarel use my index finger as a bar when playing bar chords and would fret them using my middle, ring and pinkie holding the shape and my thumb fretting the low E string.

I use it all the time since I gave up harder music and dedicated myself to the blues ways.

How else could you strike a chord like this anyway...

There are times when you really have to fret with it. Another tool in the box.

For some stuff i never use it at all, but there are some things i just can't do if i don't recruit the thumb.

I do, especially when playing anything by Hendrix, SRV, AC/DC, etc.

I have since I started, usually just to hit some bass notes when playing chords.
