Hey,

You can use any pedal you like with any guitar you own. All you will need is two guitar cables (patch cords) and maybe a 9 volt battery. When I was using my Frontman back in '96 (learning aswell), I had a Boss DS-1 pedal and it did the job.

Good Luck

ps. if you go on youtube, you can see reviews for all kinds of effect pedals. Boss pedals are good starters and can be found used in most guitar stores at good prices.

get a digitech rp-90 lightly used and you will be all set. it'll do virtually everything you could possibly need right now and wont break the bank. I got mine for $50 on ebay and have like 40 different presets created and the thing hold like 200 different presets

Also get an 9 volt AC Adapter to save on lots of batteries.

Start with overdrive and progress from there. Remember just because some is good doesn't mean more is better.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Depends on the sounds you are looking for, for me a tube screamer and a wah and you are set.

I remember when I had a beginner's guitar (Wasn't that long ago, it was some lame-azz Gibson knock-off you could buy at target for $90) and I started buying fx pedals. After buying a crybaby ($70), rat($80), a boss bassman overdrive($140), a digital delay($150), flanger($120), and a compressor($90), I realized I was blowing money out the door. Nowadays I play with just a strat and a champ 600(maybe an overdrive, usually not). Just saying, IMHO, don't make the mistake I made of buying tons of pedals in the beginning stages, that money should be saved up for a better guitar and amp first. <_<

sound advice mate.

ive done just that, got myself a nice strat and amp finally
and only now im building my pedalboard.

fenderstar.

.i would get a digitech rp. they will cover all the effects you would need, and are great to start with, as you get an idea of what effects you work well with before commiting bucks on stompboxes.
the rps start roughly around 50 quid. they bargains really.

check em out on you tube

If you're a beginner don't worry about pedals, focus on playing. If you can make a guitar straight into an amp sound good then you've got most players beat.

Yes, if the guitar has a plug, you can use a pedal. If you want a pedal...go to a guitar shop and try a bunch out. Make sure to use the same type amp you already own. You will need another cable. It goes guitar, cable #1, pedal, cable #2, amp. If you can, buy the ac adapter as well, this will save you lots of money.

Now after watching that video, I'm pissed that I don't know how to use my thumb. That dude has freaking long fingers. Ah, to be one of the blessed. Mine are too small to play like that. Oh well, you can't have it all I guess.

I've been trying the claw technique since I saw the other topic on it, and it's frustrating me.

Anyway, the Zoom sounded good to me. Nice little multi-pedal there.

Yeah, and for the price it seemed very usable. I have the Digitech RP500 and what a pain in the arse switching is. Need something more fluid and much simpler.

And heck yeah RK owns the claw.

Nope, not the pedal/style for me.

I agree with what others have said for the price of 2 pedals you can get a decent guitar ..Unless you buy the lower end pedals like Berhinger or Fab but these may leave you disappointed..
With that said it wouldn't hurt anything to get a decent overdrive or distortion pedal..The trick is getting something of quality with out hurting your pocket to bad..Because as a beginner your money is best spent on lessons a quality guitar and amp and IMHO in that order. But a decent pedal may help you ..I would suggest that you start your collection like many of us older guys have either with a Boss DS-1 which is a medium to high gain or distortion pedal or a Boss SD-1 which is a Overdrive to mid distortion pedal..If you are into hard rock or metal go with the DS-1 if it is Classic rock blues pop or rock n roll even country go with SD-1..
Both of these pedals are well made quality pedals that have started many music careers.Plus you can buy them cheap a DS-1 sells new for around $35 and the SD-1 around $45 used on E BAY you could probably get them for $25 each.I think if you would take a poll many experienced players still have these pedals on there board or at least still hanging around ..I have both and even though they aren't on my board anymore i still use them in studio settings and have been for almost 25 years..
