looks suspect to me, but I figured one of you would know better than I. $100, starting price seems iffy.

Hi dbr2026: apart from the amazingly low starting price what is making you doubtful?

Scratching my brain to remember which year they started doing necks without skunk stripes - someone here will come up with that info. And someone will also be able to say if that looks like a real CS certificate.

Nothing else is jumping out at me, but maybe I'm missing something obvious...?

One thing is for certain: if it is real you ain't going to bag it for $100. Not now you've brought it to our attention, anyhow...

Cheers - C

The pics are blurry, there is no clear close up on either the neck plate and custom shop logo, there's is no pic under the hood or of the neck pocket. I bet if you passed this on to Mike Eldred, he'd declare it a fake.

My thought was no skunk stripe and the low starting price, unless it was someone desperate for the cash, if it was real I think someone would have bid by now.

I definitely wouldnt have posted it, real or fake if I was gonna try and snag it. Ive tamed my GAS for now mainly because I am unemployed and broke!

Well thats got to be one of the ugliest burst's I've ever seen. If thats a relic, the builder must have fallen asleep or something. The polyester sheen is a bit of a indicator. As is the neck heel, the shape of it protrudes way too far from the body. Also C shaped necks didnt come in till 62 did they. I thought everything prior to then was V or boat shaped. If you look at the heel's blend into the neck its not usuall shape. Nor is their any kind of figuring to the maple and the hue of the lacquer on the neck is too light.

Heres my CS guitar neck, note this guitar isnt as expensive as relic's

Note the neck shape as it meets the heel. This guitar has a quite thick C shape. It would appear to be a V by the contour but certainly isnt.

Hard to say what that is.

As Capo mentioned above, the pics aren't good enough.

Neck tint too light, no figured maple neck. I think you guys hit it right on the head. Enlarge pic #2. See how the decals are tinted darker than the headstock/neck? I'd say someone removed those decals from a guitar with a darker tinted neck and placed them on this one. I vote fake. Please someone let me know if I'm way off base on this one. Is it common practice for a Custom Shop Strat to have the decals look like that? I wouldn't think so.

I noticed that but I have seen older Strats that look like that so I wasn't sure if it was made to look that was as part of the "relic" process. My AVRI Strat's logos look like that on the headstock, but it is an 82/83 so it has had time to devlop that look. The seller is from Italy but I might send him an email and a few questions to see what he says.

Relic and vintage accurate guitars do have a decal that is darker than the lacquer and just stuck ontop of the lacquer.

I've never owned a Custom Shop guitar, but there's at least one on this thread that does.

Anyone care to comment on the CS Certificate in the vendor's photo? Or post a pic of a bona fide real one for comparison?

Cheers - C

Now here's a play on words: "I can't put my finger on it" but something doesn't look right about the frets and fingerboard. I could be wrong but without the seller allowing any clear, concise close-ups, my gut would tell me if I were in the market for such a piece, to look elsewhere. Oh, and Cs of A mean absolutely nothing to me unless I personally know the entire history of the instrument. YMMV.

Ceri the coa looks ok to me, in comparison with mine i see no difference. That doesnt mean a fat lot though. Notice theres no shots of the serial no' on the guitar, yet the seller isnt afraid of showing them on the coa. The strap is customshop too. You can buy them things all day long on ebay. Their not necessarily forged either in my opinion. I often imagine someone with no foresight buying a CS guitar and figuring they can sell the coa, case and case candy, probably neckplate too for £300. They've made a good bit back on the price of their very expensive instrument then.
