I too would try to find a used LP Standard. Are the LP Studio's plek'd? If not, I'd definitely go with a used Standard. I really have never cared for the SG either. They may play good, (I've never played one) but I just can't get past thier looks. I think they're one of the ugliest guitars ever, besides maybe those B.C. Rich guitars. Yuck!

I have owned both and prefer the light weight and double cutaway body style of the SG.

Les Pauls do sound great, bur are uncomfortable to me, I owned a LP studio and sold it a while ago.
I´d definetely get an SG, lighter, more comfy, and not so dull, as a LP, a littel more bright tone, to say. Estetically i like the "tight curves" of the SG.
My next guitar will be an SG.

The SG is one of Gibson's most succesful shapes.

I'm an Angus Young fan, and I'm biased towards the SG standard. I'd personally have a '61 re-issue though...

No brainer for me as I do not like SGs at all, unless someone else is playing it. Take the Les Paul they sound sooooooooooo good.

Have you seen the new Zoot Suit SG's? A little crazy, but I really like 'em.

the new Studio Silverburst has the 60s neck and humbucker split option, you should check that out too.

I'm saving up for the exact same one

Before Strats became my main stay guitar i was a SG player ...I feel that the Les Paul standard is better for country and country rock and also has better clean tone ..I have never liked the studio model.
With all that said if you are a rocker or blues man or if you play live go with the SG standard..They are a much better all around guitar then the Les Paul..IMHO SG are second only to Strats..

I also love that new ZOOT SUIT SG..They may look a little different but they play and sound fantastic..This is the only Gibson product that i have been impressed with in years

Personally I would either go for a Les Paul Standard or a Les Paul Classic, both used. The Les Paul Classic is out of production, but I really enjoy mine, and I know a lot of other owners do too. As far as I know, they're about the same quality as the standards, with body and neck binding. Mine has a 60's slim neck, which makes it incredibly fast to play. You can find one for $1200-$1300 used if you're patient.

I really wouldn't settle for a studio. I think the aforementioned guitars will hold their value much better than a studio, too.

If you are looking to spend less, an SG standard would be much better than a LP studio. You can get a used one easily for $700 around here, you could probably get one for the same or cheaper. I personally have a thing for the SG Special Faded 3. It has three humbuckers, and a black or white finish, both which are worn, which I like the look of. I would probably pull the middle and bridge pup out, sell them and get a new bridge pup and a new pick guard with the money. Here's what I mean: http://www.firstqualitymusic.com/p_SGF3 ...
