I look for alternative motive too. Sales could be?

There is a shim under the neck which might give the view of the neck being a tad higher than if it was flush. The shim is located against the body on the very end of the neck or at the back edge of the neck pocket. It is typical Fender shiming.

I bought 3 sets of Abigail Ybarra pickups never installed. I am am raising cash to cover them in answer to why it is on ebay. Otherwise I would keep it.

I am a Fender strat fan that is into the history of Strats. I am not trying to get leads on this strat.

I would like to know the history of this strat.

I am most interested in talking to some person that has one, seen one, played one or has had one.

I really would like to know what pots were used in these and what paint was used.

I like to know the details of every strat I own.

It seems these are so few in numbers I have yet to find anyone that owns one that I can talk to about it. I have searched the net and came up with three or four small articals concerning these non of which speaks of body weight, paint type or pots.

This body look just like my sunburst Dan Smith exactly. The weight is the only difference. There is no black paint residue any place other than the neck pocket. The paint was applied the same way as my other Dan Smith. It was sprayed into the pickup routs and tremolo rout.

Any input from a person that really knows is appreciated.

Speculation is fun but I really want to know the facts on the Gold Gold model.

Why would anybody strip off the hardware, repaint a heavy black body and use that. That don't make sense. Then there is the issue of exact body routs as my other Dan Smith and being a 4 bolt body that is clearly an 1980, 81 or 82 body.

This guitar has to be a real Gold Gold just by deduction. It was also remoured to be owned by Duran Duran's guitar player which would account for its condition.

Halling it around in a tour truck in cold and hot weather would spider web the paint if it is nitro. It looks to be nitro.

Whilst I dont know Andy Taylor, I do know a few people who know Al Beard who was very closely tied with that band. I remember their manager getting arrested in the clydesdale tower block, he lived about 10 floors below my Nan.

I'd have to agree on the body being cellulose. The only way you'd get checking like that on a urethane guitar would be to throw a cricket ball at it. The way the paint has reacted to light over the years (turning green) is also a good indicator of cellulose.

I think she is a real Dan Smith Gold Gold. A little heavy but a beauty to look at and to play.

If anybody comes along here that really knows about these guitar please email me or leave a note here with the info on paint. weight, pot type and ohms, and anything else you can think of.

Thank you to all others here for the input. It has been fun sharing the guitar with all of you. Ain't that part of the fun of owning any Strat?

Pretty old thread....
I have an 81 Gold on Gold, I have modified it a bit though. I am the original owner, my dad bought it for me at a place called "Biasco" in Chicago my freshman year of H.S. so....1982.
I will start by saying I am a player not a collector, so I can just tell you what I see on mine.
The only thing thats seems off too me is the paint. Mine has been subjected to quite abit of abuse, but the body is prestine. I always wondered what kind of finish they put on it, because I actually tried too strip it off in the early 90's. I slathered on a coat of marine varnish stripper, only to come back a half hour later to wipe it off, I swear to you all it did was polish it to a shine. After that I assumed they sprayed or dipped it in some kind of epoxy.
It took one shot from my drummers sticks once and it got a small check. I don't know what you would do to the original finish too cause checking like that.
I contacted Fender years ago with the serial number, and they had about as much info as in the article above, in fact that is to date the most imformative article I have read.
As I said earlier I am not an expert, or collector. However, one thing I know for sure about this guitar is that it does not float. My sudio had a flood last year, of the three guitars that where out two where floating but not Goldy.
It is funny you mention the weight.. I remember how much my instructor loved that guitar when I brought it in the first time. I was young and I had never heard the word Chiropractor before, he told me to look it up. Everyone who I ever let play it said it was to heavy (sissies) :)
But every thing else looks right, mine has the same little route for truss adjustments, same "pimple spray" sheilding in the cavity, even your neck is identical, witch is wierd because I always thought that mine got past final inspection by mistake, why the hell did they spray over the frets?!!
I always wondered about that, I have never seen another one till now, I'm glad I stumbled on to this post.
Even with all your pics it's hard to tell, my guess would be extreme temp changes.
Last thing.... mine does not have a plastic tip on the tremolo bar, it is a gold metal srew on tip.
If you have not sold it yet shoot me an email.
Peace......

Thank you for the reply.

I sorted it all out in the end. It is a real Gold with some modifications.

A hefty guitar. They must have used old old wood in those days.

Thank you again.
