When I have to store my guitars I,

Detune them,
Put a conditioner on the fretboard,
Leave them in the hard case,
Stand them up,
Store them in an environment of 50% humidity,
Store them in an environment of 65 - 75 degrees,

I have never had a problem with cleaning it up, retune, and playing after storing them, even long term storage.

I think it depends on what part of the country you live in and if it is an acoustic instrument. As far as solid body guitars go I live in NY so I go through all four seasons and just like I always have read if it is comfortable in the room for you then your guitars are fine as I never had problems. Just keep them in the case standing up and do not stack them. I have tried both methods of keeping them tuned and slacking them without seeing any real difference so if I know they are going to be in the case a while I like some tension and tune them down a half step.

Hey try using fret fast or the name is the other way around, it is like a layer of wax protecting it from rust and the money is worth it :D :D like the others said store them in a cool place and try to avoid direct contact with sunlight while playing. and have fun :)

A cased guitar can be stored on its back, on its side, upright (providing it is supported and not leaning against a wall, etc) with the headstock up. Never face down!

The instrument needs to be a snug fit so that it doesn’t move about. Make sure there are no loose items such as hex keys and capo’s, etc. A cleaning cloth over the bridge and pickups will also stop the instrument from rubbing against the lining. If you’re going to store the guitar for a while, a couple of desiccant bags will help control any moisture.
